Can you give a little more detail. When I lived in Alaska the most productive "Bucktail" Fly I used was a Clouser Minnow. Tied sparce in green/white, blue/white.

bucktail flies

they had two hooks with the rear hook being upside down. two or three colors of bucktail were tied in at the head with some flash and they were trolled subsurface or on the surface.

I think I recall what your talking about. If I'm correct the hook is rather large and the head is covered in Softex or epoxy. I never fished them, but I did see them in some of the shops and heard there effective for silvers and kings.
I'll check some references tonight and see what I can find.
Try the "Alaska Fly Fishers" WWW page, they have a great archive of flies. I think this is the link, if not just google it.

Last spring on the BCFFF web site there news letter contained an article on Bucktails. I think the article was written by Bob Giles [I hope I got that right].

Also a book Edited by Bob Jones " Fly Fishing BC" had alot of beach flies in it, most fit the catagory of Buctails.

Cheers N I
