Fly fishing New Zealand

Has anyone in this forum been to New Zealand to fly fish?
If so, what is it like?
I would love to go, alas, Ohio pulls me back.
If you fished New Zealand, Please share with us your memories.

If you are really serious about New Zealand, we have a client who lives there 9 months of the year. He's an advid fly fisherman with a wealth of knowledge about the interior. I can provide you his e-mail if you like. He spents a few month on a lake in Maine each year, than come down to the southern New England coast to do a little striper fishing.

I also have a good friend from Seattle who visits NZ for a month every year. I'll send you contact info via email.

He is also an excellent steelheader while in the pacific northwest.

Rhetorical to answer at this point, but yes, over thirty years ago, and it's fantastic!

Wonderful place for flyfishing; just remember their 'seasons' are 180 degrees from ours. We're in August/summer ... their in August/winter. So it's winter steelhead season down here.

Great fly fishing but 'public access' can be a real problem so any, and all, local knowledge you can get on the areas you want to fish is a high priority. Also bring PLENTY of bug juice; the farther south you go on the South Island the worse it gets. You are a walking lunch!

Mayflyman,
Have not fished NZ in 30 years also. From what I've heard that fishing is still good but most of the good fishing is done on private property now so most likely you pay. Also it is very sight oriented fishing almost like fishing spring creeks out in Montana. When I was there in 1972 some of the larger rivers produced big rainbows on the south island and very big browns on the north island. It was said in those days that you couldn't catch on a dry fly but I found many rivers with active fish. The Manapori River south of lake Teanue(SP) on the south island had great dry fishing with rainbows 3 to 12 lbs. This river reminded me of many Montana rivers in size and the way it fished. One river that I can't remember its name is the one that follows the road out to Milford Sound. It's a small river that had incredible hatches and many fish feeding on the surface.
Don't know if any of those rivers are any good in 2001 but hope you don't have to fish private lands all the time. Remember that fly fishing in NZ is more like hunting fish than here. You must find a fish and take your time to get in position to make a good cast.
