Schlappen for streamers?

Has anyone experimented with using schlappen for the wing on streamers? I was kicking the idea around but wondered if any of the more experienced tyers could give me some insight. Of course, I realize that this isn't the ideal feather for the purpose, but I've got plenty of it and would like to use it to tie some smelt patterns.

Been there, done that..

Only my .02 cents (darn, I wish I'd coined that phrase :hehe: A goodie) on light bodied/searching patterns such as the 'Winters Hope,' a very good go.

Cheap, effective, and easy to tie.

The big problem with using schlappen for streamer wings is the stem is so soft that the wing will foul around the hook. The only ways to counteract this are: tie the wing shorter than the hook's bend; or tie the schlappen in at the bend of the hook as a pusher-style tail. Also, schlappen is too opague to simulate the translucency of baitfish.

Do yourself a favor and use quality saddle hackle or neck hackle for streamer wings. The flies will fish better, look better, and tyng will be easier. Keep in mind that the masters of featherwing streamers use saddle and neck hackle for a reason.
