Frozen fly reel

I lost a good fish this weekend to a spool firmly frozen to the reel frame. Are there reels that address this problem right up front in the design, and are thus presumably less likely to freeze up?
BTW, the reel was a Pflueger 1392, click and pawl drag. It seemed the shaft was frozen to the spool. And yes, it had been accidentally dunked ~10 mins before.

sealed drag

I would think any of the sealed drag reels would address this problem. I have dunked mine steelheading in sub 30 temps and it didn't have any problems (lamson velocity). Could have been that the pawl was frozen in place too....

Now for the important part: where did you find a fish to hook this weekend?

A buddy of mine scoped the Cady area of the Swift and said it was BARREN on saturday

San Juan, New Mexico.

Actually, it seemed the shaft was frozen to the sleeve on the spool. I managed to p[op it off eventually to find the pawls frozen as well, but that wasn't seizing up the reel.

Must have been a good dunk.

Please post a report when you get back. Have always wondered if the SJ was worth a winter trip....

frozen...wow. I have fished in very cold conditions and not had that misfortune. Josko, I can't think of any reels made specificly for freezing weather. Reels with sealed bearings wouldn't suffer from the same problem. It sounds like water froze in the bushing. Is it possible that sand got in there when it was dunked?
I think an especially thick coat of grease (super lube) would work. Come spring, wipe it off so dirt doesn't collect.
How was the fishing? The Juan is the only "destination" trout fishing that I can think of this time of year.

Actually, this article describes my experiences on the river to a 'Tee': http://www.flyanglersonline.com/feat...ast/rc277.html
It says it better than I ever could myself.
