My first trout caught on fly

Yesterday I decided to start season with flyfishing.
First I went to fly shop and asked salesperson
what fles good for this season. He offered me
elk hair caddis as quite universal for beginner.
I drove an hour to the river which is not so crowded
as any urban lake with hatchery trout and hunderds
of bait fishermen.
River was very smoll and beautifyl, surrounded by
pine forests and mountains. Water was low and clear.
I started wading down stream slowly. I treated my fly
with floatant... but fly won't drift on the surface...
Oh sh%&t! I don't know is it normal to dry fly each
time after cast but I think not. I investigated all
water which can hold trout by my mean... NO FISH!
I walked several miles of the river, asked guys who
fished nearby (only 2 persons for all day) - no fish
By the end of day I found giant obstruction made from
logged trees. It was like a dam, crossed 3/4 of river
width. I climbed to the log and I saw how fish attack my
fly. I did it several times, and I noticed that fish
take fly only when it on the surface and do not take
drowned fly. I treated it once again with floatant.
And finally I caught this. It was small rainbow.
After I released the fish, it tried to attack my fly
again. I went to my car with feel of satisfaction :-)
So what's the main point of flyfishing?

For me it depends on the species. If it's winter steelhead, I am glad just to be spending the time. If it's panfish, I'd be a little frustrated without catching one when I know how easy it is. I guess that means it's the feeling of success I fish for, which may or may not include the fish - depending on the species.
