Fish's peripheral vision for subsurface feeding

I was just wondering where I could find info.
(internet) on a fish's peripheral vision for subsurface feeding. I've done a search on the internet and am coming up empty.

Many "Thanks" in advance,

Randy Jones

The only reference that I have on fish vision is "What Fish See" by Colin Kageyama ISBN # 1-57188-140-9. It doesn't have much on peripheral vision but rather focusses on how to make a lure contrast the background of the area being fished. I know this isn't much help but its all I have.

Hi Randy,

I think you might find more usefull information by reading about lateral line and related senses in fishes. These senses are more likely to be important in that field of view that for us would be 'peripheral vision'. As I'm sure you know, fish senses are incredibly complex, and their ability to locate prey is the result of various combinations of these senses lateral line (sounds, vibrations), smell, and sight.

Good luck in your search.

Aaron

Randy -

Great to hear from you again! Steelhead season must be winding down and stripers must be on your mind?

We've all seen the perpheral view diagram of the fish whereby they can see all but several degrees directly behind them. You know the one drawn from the TOP. I've never seen one drawn from the side, which would apply to your question as well... in other words, can they see below and above as well as around?

I am sure due to the positioning of their eyes they can see much better up than down, thus the field of vision subsurface would most likely be oblique with preference to the top.

This would vary with species, for instance flounder.

I know one thing... stripers contort their bodies when picking up a fly beneath them but don't turn their heads when they grab a fly straight ahead. That would lead me to believe they can see better up, straight ahead, and to the sides than down and beneath.

Purely anecdotal observations of course.

Randy,
not positive, but I thought this topic was partially addressed in Dr. Ross's The Fisherman's Ocean. Coincidentally, he is speaking tomorrow at the Boston CCA and would probably be a great brain to pick on the subject if you don't find too much existing literature.
