Trouting in Croatia

I had an opportuntity to scout out Croatia and western Bosnia for salmonid fishing opportunities. Overall, the picture is bleak, and my advice would be to look elsewhere (from the Balkans) for fly fishing opportunities. Recent wars have bumped poaching and provided a supply of explosives; as a result most streams have been severly depleted. (I was actually offered hand grenades for sale streamside!)
The few waters worth fishing recreationally are either protected, such as the Gacka river, http://www.gackaflyfishing.hr/ or in national parks, such as Plitvice http://www.np-plitvicka-jezera.hr/ or Krka http://www.npkrka.hr/. It's a bit tough to get the story straight, but one CAN get a C&R fishing licence in these parks. A guide is mandatory but costs only 60 euro/day. These are native brown and marble trout waters, and the fishing is good to excellent a 10# brown or marble trout is not an unreasonable goal, or one can go catch decent numbers of small fish.
Gacka is a great fishing destination, and Ciro Stefanac is a great guide.
I had a chance to chat with guide Bosko Klaric http://www.avanturist-club.com/fishing_hr.htm who guides the Krka national park, as well as nearby waters in eastern Croatia and Western Bosnia. Things are tough because of indiscriminate use of explosives, but within parks and close to infrastructure points (power plants, bridges, etc.) fly fishing is still worthwhile. Surprisingly, Huchen (Hucho Hucho) seems to be making a comeback in several Bosnian rivers, and he showed me several recent pictures of trophy-sized fish.

In summary, I wouldn't pick this area as a sportfishing destination, but of one happens to be there and is interested in wetting a line, the above might help, and I'm confident the two mentioned guides will provide a quality experience.

And I'm very excited about huchen making a comeback.
