RE:Anyone Flyfish in Hawaii

Much to my chagrin I do not have direct experience with Hawaii, but most likely someone reading does. The Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau has a nice site with references to charter captains in the area, although Lanai specifically is not detailed. The main site is HERE and the fishing info is HERE.

In the meantime, let's send out some probes to the beautiful south pacific and see what we can work out.

RE:Anyone Flyfish in Hawaii

Lived on Maui for 6 years and did some flyfishing there, also from a boat casting into the rocks around the Island of Lanai.
On Maui there were two of us that flyfished the 2 flats on the Island. One Flat is just outside Lahina and the other is over on the Kehei side. There are bone fish that do come up on the flats but they are real real spookie due to so many folks harvesting Lemo,(seaweed). Your best bet is to fish the flats for Pepio, (small trevally). Find the channels on the flats where fish come in from the deep or exit and fish them 1st or last light. You can wade but wear reef walkers and make sure they are heavy duty not those Nike kind. Please do not step on the coral reef there is little left that is healthy in Hawaii.

On Lanai on the far side of the Island there is a place called Shipreck beach. The roads to it are ruff and I do not believe that you could drive a rental car there at least you never could. Maybe a local would take you over there some morning. I'll bet you could do really well off this shallow beach as it looks wadeable for a few miles or more. I have fished from a boat just out side this beach and reef by casting into the outer reef from deep water and caught plenty of trevally up to 12 pounds on a fly. Those fish will give you all you can handel on a 9 or 10 wt. You must fish this beach at first light most days because this side of Lanai gets hit by the trade winds by 10 am sometimes earlier.
Also at the harbor on Lanai you will be able to pick up a few pepio on a fly at night.
Best experience you could possibly have though is to find a way to get a local to take you fishing all night off a secluded rock cliff for big trevally using big surf gear, white eel for bait and lot's of budwiser for refreshments.
You would be totally facinated by their ways of sliding bait. If the surf guys back in New England ever got hold of these methods of fishing they would do well beyond belief for Stripers.
Good luck!
