Marlboro Show

I am looking for opinions from the general membership on the January show. Although the main floor is sold out we have an opportunity to get a booth up at the seminar bldg in the plaza itself verses the show floor.

The space is very accomodating for our hands-on tying and I would even like to build a rod while we are there and raffle it off. I will still need to talk to the rod-building savvy members to see if that can be done, but I don't see why not.

The good news is we won't have to do much to break even on the costs. The bad news is we won't have our booth on the main show floor. At $775 per 10x10 patch of concrete, it's not an easy thing to cover when you include the extra costs around that basic fee for the booth. This arrangement will be much less to cover.

The mgmt says that the majority of the attendees of the show also attend at least one seminar. Our venue is in fact a seminar style booth anyway, so it fits.

I propose we do the following:

1) hands-on tying with pro's and members as usual
2) shadow box raffle
3) rod building on the premesis
4) raffle off the rod when done

In a sense we are much more tuned into the seminar type activity than the retail booth activity anyway. I think it would be a good match for us.

What do people think?

Would you help out?

Would you come up to tie with one of our guest tyers?

I need to pull the trigger real quick so please voice your opinions here.

thanks!

I can help for what ever time you want me. Some thoughts on building the rod. Its the finish that's the most critical part of the process. The epoxie finish has to cure in a dust free environment overnight. Can't see that working in the show environment. However, here is the option. You raffle off the rod and it gets built off site and when finished sent to the winner.
The other concern I have is people rush to the seminars and don't spend that much time at the conference center. I guess it depends where the booth would be. Just my .02

Good point Fishhawk... if necessary the epoxy can wait, we can go as far as wrapping all the guides at the show. Then again, after hours there are no people around and it's really no different than my house up there? We'll have to see which way to go but it's not important to decide at this point.

The process of finding the spline, attaching the handle, all that can be done in a manner that people who come to the booth can actually learn how to do it. I will have extra blanks for people to wrap guides onto (hands on). I know if it was not for Smitty at Rod Builder's showing me how I would have had to build a couple of sacrificials first. Instead I got to start right off with a Sage travel 4-pc for my first home-built, thanks to the mentorship. We can offer a little of that at the show for people who come by.

Not to mention some killer flytying hands-on opportunities for people. John, I will talk to you about getting guest tyers at the booth.

I think it will be fun. Not as much buzz as being in our usual spot of course, but there are no spots left on the main floor so it's do this or skip it this year.

Lightbulb idea_maybe

Why couldn't you have a rod all built to raffle off? Take some old broken rod blanks to use for a seminar showing how to build a rod with hands on experence wrapping guides? and handle parts with a demo of how to make the butt section, that is fitting cork sections together, and installing the reel seat, which is the hardest thing to do in building a rod. If you wind on one guide you can do it forever. I also would suggest that you have a hand out of guide layouts for the various length rods. This way everyone would have hands on of atleast winding a guide on a rod. Most people going to a show want to roam around more than spending a lot of time at a seminar, just my thoughts.

Marlboro Show

Juro,

I would be happy to contribute flies if you want them. Just let me know. Also, I will try to be there at least one full day to help out...job permitting.

Just let me know what I can do to help.

Best regards,

-Doc

Question

If I can get the time off from work I'll be there. I'll do what I can. Can't tie worth a damn. Don't know too much. Maybe you can fit me with a sign and I'll walk around pointing people in the right direction? What do you need?

Juro,
I enjoyed helping out last year at the show and dates not withstanding I would like to do it again. Maybe I can do a short class on proper live lining technique:hehe: ! Seriously though I would be more than willing to come up to the show again and help out. Gives me an opportunity to shake some of the nasties in the middle of winter and get jazzed up for the coming spring run. As always I will help out tying if need be and anything else that needs doing.

Now we're rolling! Keep the ideas coming...

The spot is off the main floor but we get it at a significant discount over the (sold out) booths. I figure what we do is sort of seminar-ish anyway, and if I remember correctly we are where all the creature comforts (bar, restaurant, etc) are.

Of course part of the program will be to rotate through the show floor itself, so no one will miss the show.
