Juro-
Once the brochure is finalized I will send you one snailmail. Your design adds so much and everywhere I go with it I get many compliments.
Thank You.

RE:Almost official...

Thanks but when you think about who's doing what, mine is just a small part. Of course I will fulfill my part as a member in WSC but it's the coalition that is working to keep my dreams alive. It was recently posted on the steelhead board that twenty years from now there will probably be wild steelhead spawning in the upper Elwha Valley where today there are none... thoughts like that inspire me to live long so I can see it with my own eyes!

It's going to be a long tough road ahead but I am proud to be part of it.

RE:Almost official...

Thanks, Juro.

I think that design is official, now.

Also, the WSC is official. We've achieved state not-for-profit status, and will have our federal 501(c)(3) paperwork done asap.

Thanks again for your design. I think it'll catch a few eyes!!

Iconography?

I get the WSC, the infinity symbol, and those lost rainbow trout, but what's with the pawnshop balls?

Mike -

I dunno, I've never been to a pawn shop to buy balls. Did you pay by check or cash?

Pawnshop? whaaa? I must be thick, but how do you get Pawnshop out of that? I hate to miss a good joke.

RE:Almost official...

Three hanging balls is the sign for a pawn shop - three balls (eggs maybe?) are in the logo.

RE:Almost official...

Ahhh - I get it. Guess I don't get out enough.

Because of the way it was expressed, I thought it was because Powers has only seen eggs in a little jar with a green cap [img]http://www.flyfishingforum.com/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif" border="0" align="middle">

I don't know if it's too late, but perhaps a cyclonic pattern of eggs radiating from the center would be better? Or maybe the eggs could be in the infinity curve before the parr? I could give anything a try, in fact I presented a few proposals, some with eggs and some without.

These proposals were done during whatever time I had left after getting home from my daughter's hospital room (first draft), in the Cheers bar at the Cincinatti airport (second), in the hotel room in San Francisco (our Wired office) and Mountain View (Quote.com) in order to meet the WSC timelines. I am not wed to these proposals, but I felt deeply compelled to participate in the cause for protection of wild steelhead and their habitat.

So if it doesn't please the Siskels and the Eberts, I am neither offended nor surprised. Critics never consider what went into the process anyway. I am not a graphic designer, but I sometimes play one on TV.

The design was chosen by committee on the prominent west coast steelhead and salmon website <!--http--><a href="http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/ubbcgi/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=|QUT|The+Wild +Steelhead+Group|QUT|&number=3&DaysPrune=20" target="_blank">HERE</a><!--url-->.

So if it's the people who chose it who are being criticized, that doesn't fall on me yet that's very uncool... where were such comments when it counted? What do the comments hope to achieve?

In the end my concern lies solely in the interpretation of the comment itself and it's author. Mike is a cool guy and if I didn't know him well, my impression from this comment would NOT lead me to seek fishing with him or to extend my hospitality to him if he were visiting my home waters. That defies the person behind the remark, he is a great guy and a hardcore fisherman. So like his critique, many will judge him without knowing what was behind his face value. It appears to be sarcastic. We're not going to police the place, but maybe it's gotten big enough so that we establish a level of voluntary decorum.

Maybe that's why the remark, voiced as it is, doesn't seem to fit here in this forum. But that's a good thing!

RE:Almost official...

I don't think it should change a bit FWIW. The "real" pawn shop sign has the balls hanging from ropes so it is not a full on duplication.

RE:Almost official...

Hmmphhh. Mumble grumble. rrrrrrr.

This post is going to violate all of my sacred rules on humor, which start with "never explain". The minute you start explaining yourself is the minute you stop being funny.

But I just spent some time on the phone with Juro, whom I love like a brother, whom I've known virtually since he was still suffering coastal displacement, and whose professional endeavors support the value of my stock options. And Juro has been hearing from the choir, and the choir has been saying "what the F is up with Powers?"

First, the explication: I posted "I get the WSC, the infinity symbol, and those lost rainbow trout, but what's with the pawnshop balls?". The "lost rainbow trout" in an inversion of my favorite Juro line, "there are no rainbows, only landlocked steelhead". The pawnshop reference is, as Hawkeye picked up on, the fact that three balls hanging outside a shop are the icon of that business.

In fact, I wondered if there was a different symbolism represented by three balls in this context. Maybe the Saanich or Songhess peoples of the Pacific Northwest have a trinity concept that's relevant. What do I know? (As it turns out, they didn't mean anything).

Now, the explanation: (here's where the weight of scrutiny sinks the fragile buoancy of a #26 dry joke). A joke to me is funny if I laugh. If anyone else laughs or even gets it, that's a secondary benefit. Hawkeye at least got it. Secondly, humor is subversive. Now, the whole lot of you have had your undies in a bunch over mission statements and the fact that Juro has been drinking himself under the table every night with the proceeds of "members'" funds. Well, it's winter and it's no surprise that fishermen would act that way. My response to a lot of raw nerves and wounded feelings is to pour salt on. I think it's cathartic.

In furtherance of Things for the Official Record: I intended no editorial comment on the logo, which is pretty. I've never seen a steelhead. I neither mock nor endorse the Wild Steelhead Coalition.

If it's not clear yet, my entire online existence is a piece of performance art with the message "lighten up".

55 days, kids.

Mike, you had me laughing out loud. I don't know if you intended that ... well I guess I do know that you don't care if others get it. Anyway, great post.

RE:Almost official...

FWIW: I thought the "balls" were eggs and the smaller to larger fish were a Cycle of Life kind of thang...
