Floating Sandeel

This was an attempt to tie a guarenteed floating sand eel. The tail is tied in with about 5 strands of pearl large saltwater flashabou then covered on top with 4 long olive hackles and the bottom with 3 long white hackles with the base feathers intact. Then spun olive deer hair on top and spun white dear hair on the bottom. The eyes are small Puglisi eyes ,burnt in and then secured with goop. Fly is 8 inches long.

Floating Sandeel

John,

Beautiful job! The deerhair work looks great. How big around and on what kind of hook?

Best regards,

-Doc

Doc... it's rather small... but about as big as my pinky finger... the hook is a 3/0 long shank. The head is about 2 inches long.

John, the fly looks like a winner. Have you considered pretreating the deer hair with some type of floatant to extend its bouyancy? In my experience, deer hair gets waterlogged after a while and even after squeezing it out a few times it just doesn't have the same floatability until completely dry again.

Just curious.

Mark... I did one popper a while ago which I coated with epoxy and it held up well... the bouyancy was maintained... but your point is well taken... I will try both ways... Thanks
