PUblic Meetings EEZ

MarineFisheries Advisory

October 21, 2003

NOAA FISHERIES HOLDS PUBLIC MEETINGS ON POTENTIAL CHANGES TO ATLANTIC STRIPED BASS MANAGEMENT
Massachusetts to Host Hearing on December 9

NOAA Fisheries will hold a series of public meetings in the Atlantic coastal States to discuss its intent to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) to analyze the impacts of potential revisions to Federal Atlantic striped bass regulations for the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). NOAA Fisheries is considering a recommendation from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to implement regulations in the EEZ that: (1) remove the moratorium on the harvest of Atlantic striped bass in the EEZ; (2) implement a 28-inch minimum size limit for recreational and commercial Atlantic striped bass fisheries in the EEZ; and (3) allow states the ability to adopt more restrictive rules for fishermen and vessels licensed in their jurisdictions. All persons affected by or otherwise interested in Atlantic striped bass management in the EEZ are invited to participate in determining the scope and significance of issues to be analyzed in development of an EIS by participating in one or more of the scheduled scoping hearings.

Thanks for posting this John. I plan to be at the meeting in Old Lyme on December 2nd.

Which website did you copy this from? The tag line at the end says that a copy of the scoping document will be available after November 3rd, and I wouldn't mind reading it.

This is a concern to me because we don't know what the impact of opening the harvest on adults in that area will have on the overall population. Clearly it's a major brood population, everyone knows there are nothing but breeding sized fish in the mix to speak of.

If this population is opened to commercial and recreational harvest, who's to say the impact could not be similar to the Greenland open seas atlantic fishery which has been proven to be of significant impact to the entire north atlantic population of salmon.

If it ain't broke, why fix it... it's not like there aren't enough stripers to satisfy the insatiable mortality rates we already sustain outside of the zone.

Instead of asking why not, perhaps they should be asking "why"?

The biomass is NOT greater out there, it's what it is inshore because of out there. Leave 'em alone!

Juro, you're last question is perhaps the main reason that I will be attending the meeting down here in CT. I don't want to stand around and watch something happen if it isn't necessary, appropriate, or justified.
