Smile Abel 4.5 N AR or Billy Pate Marlin AR

Hi all,

I want to save my fingers on anything heavier then a #12 line, so form #13 and up I would be looking for a Anti-Reverse reel.

I have and use a Bunch of Abel reels in DD, like the 3N, 3S, Super 8, 3, Super 12...............

I have been looking for AR reels, and I think only two of them would be good enough......... Abel 4.5 N AR or Billy Pate Marlin AR (maybe on of the bigger Hayden reels from Australia).......

Advise is welcome........

Cheers, Gerald.

I would definitely consider one of the Hayden reels. Outstanding product at about the same price. Another excellent AR reel is the Henschel from Germany. In my case, all my #13 weight and above are dual-modes and the top ones there are Seamaster and Henschel.

Pate Tarpon reel

In case you can use something smaller, I have a nearly new Pate Tarpon AR reel and spare spool listed in the For Sale By Owner section

I have about 20 years worth of experience with the Billy Pate reels, both DD and later with the AR. I have bunch of them and some of them are numbered in the low 100's, Ted recently commented about the age of some of them. There has never, ever been a problem with any of them.

Every other year I have them serviced, have never been charged for that and they have even upgraded some of them and never charged for that either.

They are low maintenance, I never open them and they just continue to work perfectly. As a captain I often get comments about the fact that I provide quality gear and tackle, that's an image I'm proud of.

If you really want to compare reels, check out how long it takes to get one serviced! Will they give you less than a week turn around time?

And It's hard to beat the price.

Mel

I've used both Abel 5 and Pate Bluefin and would prefer the Bluefin for billfishing and large tuna- not sure why, they are both fine reels. Maybe it's the no clicker on the Abel. Line recovery speed on the huge Bluefin is impressive, but with all that backing, it does become kind of heavy and hard to cast.

I'm not sure if you've looked at the Penn 4 A/R, but it's a very underrated reel. Ther HT100 will stand up to the best cork, and it's built tough. Only drawback is that spools are a bit hard to change, but that's an issue with the pates as well.

My next offshore reel will be a Hayden because of the lever drag feature they offer. I find it really irritating one has to either back off the drag fully to strip line, or practice outboard starts. The lever drag lets one keep a carefully preset drag while stripping line without effort.

Speak with Jay Horton who goes by the name of "2HandTheSalt" on this Forum and who is the Hayden Rep in this location and he can atleast give you information on the Hayden as compared to the Abel and Pate, since there is a ton of info on both the Abel and Pate available, to give you some basis for a good comparison.

Here's another vote for checking out the Hayden before committing. The Pursuit #6 AR is one heck of a reel.
