Irish Salmon Catch Statistics 2000

For all those who enjoy salmon angling or have an interest in how they are getting on, the Central Fisheries Board has published the Irish salmon catch statistics for 2000 on its website in the following location:

Milo, are those striped bass at the bottom of the page on sea angling from shore??? It is titled harbours, and talks about mullet.I haven't seen many mullet in my life, but never saw any that looked like those... Tom D

Tom,
They are (small) thick lipped grey mullet. Mostly caught by light fishing techniques with small baits and encouraged to feed by use of shirvy (sort of like rubby dubby but less emphasis on gore). Now more fly fishers are targeting them as they go to over 10lbs (although the record in Ireland is not over 8) and move like super charged steam trains (they are more stream lined than bass). Regarded as one of the few Irish sea fish which will take you to the backing, they are extremely wary and require careful stalking techniques in most encounters.

Our bass is more like your stripers but with out the stripes and not so big.
