Smart Media Upgrade

I want to upgrade my storage capacity on my Olympus D-460 Digital Camera. I currently have an 8Mb Smart media Card & want to upgrade to around 32Mb. I'm also interested in Smart Media floppy converter that speeds up downloads by avoiding the serial port (No USB on my machine). I should also mention that my PC is not Windows 95/98, but NT.

I have been looking around some of the e-commerce electronic sites & now I'm more confused then when I started. There are thrird party products that are less expensive than the name-brands, but these worry me regarding compatability. As far as the Floppy converter goes, I've only found on brand that explicitely said "NT Compatible".

Has anyone upgraded there Digital Cameras? If so, what are your recommendations? Juro, didn't you have an Olynpus D-360 at one time?

BTW: I wish I had waited & got the NEW Olympus D-490, it looks really nice!

Here's some examples of the type of information I've been looking at:

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

GregO -

I'm not sure what the number of my camera is but I really like it. I'll check it out and post later.

Talking about waiting - I wish I waited for this one... <!--http--><a href="http://www.olympusamerica.com/product.asp?product=615&p=16" target="_blank"> HERE </a><!--url-->

Although it's a little out of my reach at $750-800, I checked one out at Costco. Just the thing for fly tying mpeg clips and macro shots without any film.

I'll post info when I get home. Also, Costco has great prices on the smartmedia cards.

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

After a little help from e-shopper expert (addict) Al, I decided on the following.

<!--http--><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000488VH/106-2383704-8299669" target="_blank">SmartMedia-32</a><!--url-->

<!--http--><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/glance/-/photo/B0000488VL/106-2383704-8299669" target="_blank">FlashPath</a><!--url-->

This upgrade provides 140 HQ pictures, plus drag & drop download capability, which sure beats that serial crap, all for $123 (minus $15 with e-cupon). I sure hope it works as good as it sounds.

That's sounding too good to resist! Thanks guys... I really hate the serial all or nothing download too. How about a power cord?

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

The FlashPath device goes right into the 3.5" floppy drive, so No Cables. Then youy access your A: Drive & copy (drag&drop) the files to wherever you want.

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

Received my order today. The 32Mb Card holds 146 HQ Pictures. The FlashPath Disk DOES work just like a floppy, stick it in, point & click. Down load time is 2-3 Seconds per image. You can also drag files to the trash & clean your media in seconds. NT divers Did Not come with disk, but were easily down-loaded from SanDisk site. I give it 4&1/2 stars. Thanks for the help.

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

Running out of time and options for the xmas wishlist... a 32 mb card made it but I guess I will still be doing the ridiculous all-or-nothing download for a while. I think I will order the optional AC power adaptor... I don't think batteries are the right use of power to download all of a 32 mb card. The 8mb takes plenty long enough as it is.

Someday I want to upgrade to a digital camera that can take good fly macros. I am finding this is not a trivial pursuit!

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

That's another good thing about the FlashPath, it doesn't use the cameras batteries. I have been getting a little more than a month out of 4 AA Lithium Batteies, up until now. I think for $60 the FlashPath is a great option; however, if you have a USB port there are even better options; I did not research these as I'm not USB.

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

FWIW: I have attached USB based Smartcard readers to NT no problem (Sandisk Imagemate), regardless of what people say about NT and USB not playing well together.

Buy.com had the best deal on a 32 meg card including the reader when I bought it for my Sony TRV900 <!--http--><a href="http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/home/digitalvideo/minidvcamcorders/dcr-trv900.shtml" target="_blank"> 3 CCD Sony Camcorder With Integrated Still Camera

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

Mike, just to clarify, are you talking Windows 2000 (based on NT, but with some major differences) or NT 4.0? The last time I checked there were no USB drivers for NT 4.0.... I just checked the Sandisk web site and could not locate anything other than drivers for Mac, Windows 2K, 95, and 98. Have they come out with an NT 4.0 widget? If so, details please!!

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

My bad! I just looked at the PC and it's a parallel port Imagemate on the NT workstation. At home I have the USB version.

Sorry about that.

Digicams in general

I have a Nikon 990 which I find fantastic. It uses CF media. I was able to use an external flash with nikon cables and an SB26 flash. So I simply set my cam. to no flash and use my ext. flash separately. I have some of the best images on ebay. The price has come down to $850. You can usb from cam to computer, pc or mac.

I have a sandisk which works on both but you don't need it.

I have never crashed with Windows 2000, never. The beauty is that it makes the system plug & play, and the usb works.

As a sample, check out this auction:

RE:Smart Media Upgrade

Hey Garo -

I went to the link, but it said the item was no longer up. Did you sell the item with those sharp images?

Sounds like you have a primo digital outfit. How does it do for macro fly shots?

Juro
