North fork Colorado River - late report

Sorry its taken me so long to post this. Things were hectic at home when I got back from the trip.

Brad and I have been trying to fish together for at least 2 years and on the 13'th I had the pleasure of meeting with Brad. We headed out from Brad's house, through the Rocky Mountain National Forest over the continential divide, and stopped close to Granby CO, on the northfork of the Colorado. Starting out in the late afternoon under blue bird skys with a water temp in the low 60's and lots of caddis's about. Brad had the hot hand early with a serendipity and buckskin 2 fly rig fished on the swing, while I couldn't hook a fish for the life of me. After a couple of hours I finally got the skunk off with a nice brown on a peacock herl soft hackle. Through this Brad continued to have a fish on at least every 3'rd time I saw him.

As the sun came off the water I noticed a hatch, matched reasonably well by a small red quill and started to pick up fish at a good pace as the fishing day came to a close. And for those of you who may think you don't cast far enough the secret to curing my "bad hooksetitis" was to forget the river size and shorten up the casts. If I hadn't gotten up at 3 am before flying out to Colorado I might have figured it out quicker.

Brad, thankyou for the opportunity to share this river with you, and for doing the driving. I owe you big time. Unfortunately business prevented any further fishing on the trip, so I never got to sample the other places we talked about.

John, I am glad that we finally got the chance to hook up. Sorry that you never made it out again. The fishing has been pretty good in many waters since we have had such a great runoff. Maybe next time we'll go a bit closer to home, I was fading fast on the way back.

Brad

Closer to home... Nah. My wife might start to think I listened to her when she said "You won't take an afternoon flight because you'll get to the hotel at midnight, but you'll leave the house at 3:30 am for an early flight so you can go fishing and get to the hotel at midnight!"

Actually I was lucky to make it to the hotel, I was wiped out.
