6/10 South Beach evening report

I was lucky enough to end my work day in Chatham and we all know what that means. I parked at the lighthouse and was making my first cast by 6pm. I found fish at the convergence of the surf and the channel but couldn’t hook up. I kept working the surf side picking up a fair number of smaller fish and seeing packs of much larger one tease me as they swam by heading north. I made my way to the flats side and worked the water all the way to the Rip Ryder drop off where I stayed until about 9pm. The “connections” where much better on the flats side with a good number of smaller fish spiced up with fish in the mid 30’s coming to my thumb. Not to jinx us or anything but it is looking really good for the BB day.

Back at the truck I found a new experience in pain. My rod did not want to come undone and as I was pulling my hand slipped and slid up the rod. I must have nicked the epoxy at some point and exposed the ferrule foot because as my hand slid up the rod the foot pierced my index finger and reemerged about 1/3 of an inch away only to continue into my middle finger reemerging again 2/3 of an inch from the entrance hole. The ferrule then broke off the rod and my fingers were effectively sewn together. Some of the curve made it into my finger and the process of removal was, shall we say, delicate.

All in all it was a great night with willing fish, a beautiful sunset and moon glow, and one heck of a workout. As my first striper trip of the year I think it was a keeper.

Currently cringing about your experience with the ferrule.

Theres just something nasty about impaling yourself with a fly rod.

Sounds like you at least had a good night of fishing to ease the pain.

Hey Hawkeye,

Nice report. Have you been fishing up the No. Shore this season? Someone refered to a "Hawkeye" up her on another board.
As for your rod....OUCH. I'm cringing too.

LEfty

Hi Guys,
I will be looking for you folks on South Beach or Monomoy this weekend. I arrive the Cape at Noon tomorrow, with the family.
Will be fishing until Tuesday.
Fishawk, sorry to hear about the ferrule incident, same thing happened to a youngster who was with me in AK, two years ago.
Hope you are feeling better.
Does anyone know if Monomoy action has started? We had a super week, last week, in all the storms off South Beach, Morris Island and Pleasant Bay.
Cheers,
DK

Youch!!!

Hope they are healed for the weekend. Sounds like you had a fantastic evening despite the shishkabob.

Did you say the ferrule broke or came loose? I have a spare if you need it.

OUCH!, If that happened to me it would have been BEFORE the fishing started. At least you hooked up!

Be sure to clean the flesh off before sending it in for repair, they'll pick right up on what happened. ARGHH, I can almost feel it. Hope there's no real damage.

Great report.

Taking the rod apart....

Gregg...

I carry those small rubber pieces that they sell in the grocery store for opening jars to take the rods apart....especially when the rod is wet, you're tired from a days (or nights) fishing and the advent of multi-piece rods...the best thing is that I think I got a pak of 3 for like 1.99...I have them stored in my truck, gear bag, pak, etc....

The fingers are ok just a little sore but that sure as heck isn't going to stop my fishing!!!!

Lefty, that must have been someone impersonating me . I havn't fished the NS since last spring and lately I haven't been doing much fishing anywhere. The boat project is eating a lot of time - it's comming along nicely but much slower and more expensively than planned.
