Anadromous Fishway Restoration Project Needs Voluteers

An opportunity exists next week (April 3, 4, & 5) to accomplish an important milestone in the effort to restore the original annual migrations of anadromous fish (alwives, blueback herring, and shad) to the Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers and their tributaries. Your assistance is needed to make this happen.

The towns of Middleboro and Lakeville expect an excess of herring to return to their fishways this year. As a consequence, the Middleboro-Lakeville Herring Fisheries Commission is offering Herring for this project. The U.S
Fish & Wildlife Service will provide a tank truck capable of transporting 2,000 fish per trip from Middleboro to the stocking locations along the Concord, Sudbury, and Assabet Rivers. They will also provide some personnel.
Volunteers, however, are needed for such tasks as forming netting brigades and ferrying fish between the trucks and the river.

A "Herring transfer team" is needed to load the herring onto the tank trucks at the Oliver Mills on the Newmasket River, a tributary of the Taunton River.
If you and a few friends, or your children, can help, please contact Mike Meixsell or Doug Smithwood at the above telephone numbers.

A few hours of your time could go a long way toward the restoration of this fishery.

RE:Anadromous Fishway Restoration Project Needs Voluteers

Steve -

Thanks for bringing this important event to our attention! As you know I am very compelled to participate in anadromous restoration projects and regret that I will be in Washington State those days. Actually, I don't regret that I will be out there - only that I can not participate in this effort. I hope others take the time to contribute to this cause. I would very much like to publish photos and details on this effort and hope I can do my part in raising awareness of the program.

Please inform me of any (every) such project that you know of and I'll happily roll up my sleeves for such a cause whenever I can.
