Upper Delaware 5/12-5/14

Just got back for the mighty Delaware. Weather was nasty. Managed to get fish on all three days on Apple Caddis. What a riiver. Its the Housy on steroids. The river was off according to the locals. I can't imagine what its like when its on. Looks like this will be an yearly trip for me. Perhaps we could do a Deleware Clave on of these years. FishHawk.

The Delaware....

Yeah - I used to live 1/2 hour from the West Branch. Loved it. The fishing on the whole chain is good - and the Apple Caddis hatch is something to behold! Good fishing throughout the whole summer on the West Branch (dam discharge keeps temps cool). The "Big River" is excellent, too! And lots of big fish (browns, rainbows) in there. Also, the shad run gets up to Hancock about now, and they are spectacular. I'd stack it against any river, east or west. Excellent dry fly water, and unless water is "heavy", can also be waded and floatfished.
Conditions are available at www.mayfly.com
They also describe best fishing flows, as well as giving current data.

BobK,

I grew up in Pennsylvania about 100 miles by road from Hancock. I fished it a lot when in college and for 3 years after I graduated from college, which ended when I moved to Montana at age 25. You forgot to mention the great smallmouth fishing on the mainstem below Callicoon, or the fine pickerel fishing in the West Branch, East Branch, or mainstem.

I used to fish it nearly every weekend from mid-May until Labor Day when it used to close for the year. Had some great night fishing with very large flies for oversized browns on the West Branch and mainstem above Callicoon.

I keep telling myself that some day I will get back east to fish it and some of the other waters I fished like Penn's Creel and the Lackawanna and Lackawaxen or the smallmouths on the Susquehanna.

But some outstanding fishing...

can be had for TROUT in the Calicoon - never mind the "Main Stem"!
