The population explosion of green crabs firts noted here in Chatham is spreading rapidly according to biologists. Fishermen are reporting that the abundance of green crabs is reducing the effectiveness of both crab imitations and real crabs as bait. Fly fishermen report that a fly pattern developed by John Morin of Chatham, with construction details widely distributed on the Internet, was originally extraordinarily effective, but its effectiveness has dropped off dramatically. According to a local fisherman "Almost all of our flyfishing is catch and release. We sure were giving those stripers a workout with that fly. It's incredibly realistic if properly tied, looks like the real thing in the water. There are just as many fish around now but they aren't biting. Wish we could figure out what is going on."

Biologists report that field studies show that local striped bass now avoid the green crabs, particularly those in the size range of the new fly, a serious problem as the bass were once a significant predator of the crabs. On a positive note, the biologists report that the bass aslo seem reluctant to consume immature flounder in this size range, a trend that may assist recovery of the flounder stocks. The cause of these changes is unknown but is expected to be the subject of future multi-million dollar federal research grants.

Spray paint the egg sac area a faint glow pink and it will turn those stripers back on! No other color is even close!
