Brown mono midge

Hook: TMC 3761BL #18
Bead: Glass amber or brown roccale Thread: 8/0 brown (brown used here), Mono: 5X maxima UG here.

The body color of this fly can be changed by using different thread or an underlay of a different material.

Place bead on hook. Tie in thread behind bead, wrap hook to bend, tie in mono then wind foward leaving a neat underbody. If you want an underlay tie it in now and wind it forward then tie off. Wind the mono forward and tie off

This variant has an underlay of pearl mylar.

John,
Those look great. The mono gives a much buggier look than say a copper wire alone.

Sean, I didn't enter it in the swap because I haven't used them yet.

Mono Midge

I've tied them in black and tan down to size 20 with Maxima 4lb test. Caught a nice bow with the size 18 tan last year, but they were seriously schooled up. Probably could've caught one on all the monstrosities I've seen searching this site. I like to rib mine with fine gold wire for a little flash, it fits snuggly between the mono. I've collared them with peacock herl also.

I'm going to use this idea in a little bigger proportion for a green caddis larva and grannom pupae representation. Both show serious segmentation and I wonder if the translucence of mono would suggest gasses traped under the skin - a mechanism caddis use to emerge.

Let me know if anyone has any luck with these patterns!
