Eggs

Good evening,
An A.P. article released in the Kanasas City Star by Jeff Barnard states that a 12 year study has been finished by Daniel Heath, expert in Conservation Genetics at the University of Windsor / Canada
The study done at Yellow Island Aquaculture in British Columbia found that Salmonids raised in hatchery conditions rapidly evolve to produce "smaller" eggs, as much as 25% smaller. It is further reported that this evolution is genetic in tendency because in hatchery conditions, there is NO competition for food like in the wild. The full report / study will be released in Fridays (3/14) Journal Science.
Anyone at Fly Fishing Forum / Wild Steelhead Coalition know about Heath and this study?

Not really...

But that's a good study (assuming everything/all conditions were equal). The key to this, however, is what effect does it have on offspring, and what are the long term effects, if any. Is there any change in genetics? Size/growth of offspring? Why this anomaly? Wow, this opens up a pandora's box of questions.

I sincerely hope they are doing follow-up work, as just saying "hatchery fish" covers a multitude of sins. Was this an effect of inbreeding of hatchery stocks?

Whew. My brain hurts just thinking about all the possibilities/implications, and not knowing what "controls" were in place to eliminate/minimize error.
