I have not fished that river, but I hear it is good and is definitely in a beautiful area, especially this time of year. Try fishing in the Quechee Gorge, which is public, but may require some scrambling. I also hear that some of the Connecticut River tribs hold runs of Landlocked Salmon and larger browns this time of year. Not sure of web-sites, but Rhey Plumley's book, "Fly-fishing Northern New England" has helped me find some decent fishing up here. Streamers and nymphs will be the way to go, I think.
I have swam in Quechee gorge and it is beautiful and very fishy looking. Plumley's book is informative and your best bet outside of a local tackle shop.
In addition to the streamers, try a small glo-bug or 2. Fish should still be on the redds in a couple of weeks.
You might want to ask the crew at Lyme Angler in Hanover, NH for their recommendations.
You can reach them at 603-643-1263.
There is also a tackle shop about 1 mile south/west of the gorge but I cannot recall the name of the shop.
While you are in the area make sure that you head to Simon Pearce and watch their craftsmen blow glass in the basement of the shop. They are talented folk and I always enjoy the show.
The best dinner I have ever had (very pricey so I am glad that my wife agrees) was at the Jackson House Inn in Woodstock. The proprietors are a very interesting couple from Argentina and the food is out of this world.
There is a place called Firestones (I think) right near the gorge too. They have an awesome and classy Sunday brunch.
I almost feel sorry that all of the info that I had for you was about food and not fish!
I hiked down into the gorge this summer. There is a large pool at the south end of the trail that was definitely holding some fish. There were also a number of nice looking pools that you could hike back up to. I would suggest hiking down on the trail to the east of the gorge and then crossing over the river and working your way up the west to access the other pools.
Tight Lines,
Sean
