My favorite is a peacock hurl body with a splochy gray/blue dun hen hackle.
For the partridge & orange I think the orange floss is suposed to be silk because it changes color (to olive?) when wet. Whichever you use tie the hackle real sparse, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 turns is enough.
The fish were rising down in the slower water. Do you think they could be taking something on the surface? If so what might it be, Winter caddis or midges?
I second the P&O - great fly. I've even had good results using flourescent hot orange floss - but just a tiny 'bump' behind the hackle.
Splashy rises to sedge, bumps and boils I would suspect midges (generally). I find midges very tough to see on the water but if they're about in any numbers they generally 'hover' in swarms just above head hight before dark.
I go with the o/p as well.I often fish and have great success with a hares ear and partridge as well.
