I was sitting in my office this afternoon watching the snow come down and I began to daydream about trout fishing and some of the wonderful places it has taken me. The little creek below is probably one of my favorites. Its small, not to many big fish and I would normally not drive the more than the 3 hours it takes me to get there for another creek like it. But it is one of the coolest places I have ever fished. The place is just mesmerizing.
What places do you love to fish? Just a picture or description would be fine, or a general location. No need to give away your best-kept secrets.
I prefer the smaller and lesser known waters to the big name places. In that same vein, I also prefer the out of the way stretches of the big name places (i.e., pools that are yet to be named).
In nortwestern Maine there are a handful of native brook trout streams near the Richardson Lakes that are my absolute favorites. I only fish them as a guest of a friend and probably couldn't remember how to get to them on my own, but I suppose that's the way I would prefer it. I also don't mind that I can hardly ever remember the streams' names. They just have crystal clear water, beautiful structure, and pretty native fish.
I would have to agree I like to fish the out of the way places. I do have a twist to add to this I love to fish in the dead of winter. You very rarely see anyone on the well known rivers here in michigan except for the rare winter steelheader "beginning not to be as rare" but if you pay attention to the maps provided by the DNR there are many places where steelhead don't swim that are open year round and you never see anyone on and to me fishing in the snow in the dead calm quiet is a great time. I also enjoy steelheading but these days I have been trout fishing more and more.
Interesting question, especially since I do virtually no trout fishing anymore because I prefer to fish for steelhead.
There are two streams in Montana that are special trout fishing havens, and neither is very well known so I will not name them herein; but anyone with some knowlege of Montana would have no real trouble finding them. One is a public spring creek that is located a dozen miles or so from Three Forks, MT. The other is the very top three miles of a well known river on the west slope of the Continental Divide, that was among Gary LaFontaine's favorite.
And in Pennsylvania there is a terrific river flowing through a canyon for nearly its whole length that has in recent years been re-habilitated in its lower reaches that holds many fond memories, including a 10lb brown caught about 1:00 a.m. one August night. This river helps form the western boundary of the Pocono Mountains in its middle section.
Maybe not as spectacular but special in its own way .......
This is "yours truly" making an upstream mend on the Teviot at Ancrum in the Scottish borders several years ago. The pic was snapped by Geoff Bucknall and featured in an artlicle he published on 'Downstream Wet Fly" in a magazine that has long since ceased publication.
The Trout run large here as do the Grayling and I have many fond memories of April fishing on this beat. :smokin:
As you will notice from the muck in the foreground trees, water levels can get quite high here :lildevl:
Guess I am begining to miss trout fishing. Gave it up on the most part to steelhead fish 20 some odd years ago. Rarely cast a fly to a trout anymore, maybe out at my daughters ranch in Wyoming. But here is my favorite and
it will make you drool.
Know a place in Montana that has a spring creek that is less than 1/2 a mile long more like a quater mile maybe as the crow flies. It comes out of the ground from 3 deep holes about 4 or 5 feet across each. The creek is mostly about 6 to 8 feet wide and 1 foot to 3 foot deep with a few 4 to 5 foot deep cuts on the bends. This Spring Creek ends in the same way it started by just disapearing back into the earth. It has no name no markings on any maps made in the last 50 years but did see it on a real old title map some one had. That's how I went looking for it back in 1978. It is loaded with water cress and so much aquatic insect life, the water crystal clear always. It have never seen it freeze even at 40 below zero but the bushs sure get icy that surround it. The closest river to this creek is about 3 miles away a very famous river indeed. But they have no above ground connection and I do not think they ever have from the looks or lay of the land.
I have never brought anyone to fish this creek not even my best friend or relatives, no one. But back in 1996 while on a visit to Montana found out a famous fly fishing husband and wife knew about it and they said they had never told any of thier clients or even family members because it's such a dream to fish. We think there must be one other person that knows about it because there is an old bench that gets moved from time to time to a different place on the creek and an occasional foot print. I guess you might want to know if there are any fish in it? :smokin:
Maybe $500,000 and I'll give you some sound clues. :lildevl:
My favorite would probably be the Mooseleuk Stream in Maine. I'm sure nobody here has ever heard of it, but it's WAY out there. I guarantee you won't see another fisherman the entire day/week unless it's one of the guys you go there with. The scenery is amazing. You just have to watch out for bears and moose.

P.S. Lots of rattle snakes on this creek too! [/QUO
in the northern tip of south carolina there is a place called hells hole you will get your limit every time so if ur in sc try to find it
I spend about 8 month of the year dreaming about casting into my little trout stream. It is not that productive for large fish but it has nice lies for little brook trout early in the year and I almost always have it to myself.
Charlie, I see you fish the Gaspe. If you are passing through the Rimouski area and want to check out some nice little trout streams, drop me a line.
My favorite place to fish is the Missouri River in Montana. It's a giant spring creek full of wild educated browns and rainbows. I also like some of the lesser known small streams that Montana has to offer. I really do miss trout fishing now that I'm into saltwater fly fishing. I hear the call of the Wild Missouri , perhaps a trip is in order in 07. FishHawk:smokin:
