Ryan --- what do you consider a good rod to enter into the area of Spey style casting without spending the farm but not getting discouraged with an inadequate piece of hardware.

I wanted to hate it. The build reeked off cheapness, but it cast pretty well, and I don't know of a better cheap rod. That would be the Cabellas 14' #9. I think for three hundred some bucks, you get a WindCutter line, an SA. reel and a sock and tube. Not a bad start.
Even with all the hardcore Spey guys onboard here, I think the reason the replies are less than enthusiastic is that there may really be no "entry level" to the Spey thing, sad to say.
There is the entry testimonial, the entry trial, the entry envy - then the entry purchase of one of the top Spey rods made.
Perhaps the closest thing would be to pick up a used 9140-4 Sage in the little nickel or Ebay, or a Loomis GL3.

I would very HIGHLY recomend the St. Croix line of Spey rods. They come in 3 rods, anywhere from a faster more overhand rod down to a true slow action Spey rod. They come with a lifetime warranty and their componets are second to none.
Throw on Tiogo and Windcutter line and you are all set for around $500 US dollars.
