Shock Leaders

For what it's worth, The bluefishing is crazy in RI. Fish after fish.... All eight pounds. More importantly I learned something new today.

Usually we use the twiston wire leaders marketed by Orvis. They have a pre-tied Hayward twist with a nylon sleeve on the hook end. In the past I have found that is type of wire is less intrusive, say then the American 17 pound test wire.

A client was using a small length of 50 pound test mono. It wasn't hard mono like Mason, just heavy duty stuff. When he switched to this method, he didn't lose a fish. Had no fray in the leader. He was using a slightly longer shank hook. His fly rode perfectly with very little loss of action.
