I put a striped bass fly for tuna and shark on the archive Board and since it's a striper I thought I post here so those who want to check it out can go there if they don't usually check the archive board. Can't put the picture here.
Nice fly!
I bet in the right place at the right time that fly would attract attention from some canibalistic cow bass. A certain springtime location I can think of virtually never has schoolies less than ~2 foot long during a 2 -3 week period in which the heavy weights are staked out ambushing herring. Any smaller striper would be eaten!
Great looking fly John! What are the materials used in the fly? Looks like 3 full bucktails, a #3 Metz Grizzly neck and about 3 packages of crystal flash.
Seriously though how was it tied and what was used? The fly is Awsome!
Mike, actually there is very little crystal flash...Mostly the flash is Flouro flash layered between applications of natural material. What I did was a tail of white buck tail wrapped with flash,,then 3 white wide hackles on each side...then 3 grey hackles (actually it is Shleppen (SP?) ) tied high above the white and add more flash..then a corsair speader, Then white bucktail thinly tied all around and more flash, then grey bucktail on top..Another corsair spreader...6 to 7 grizzly hackle places one after the other , or next to each other over the spreader so that they assume the appropriate position. Then more white bucktail on the bottom and grey on top. Fill in sides as necessary with the bucktail ,then blue kinky fiber on top , the light blue crystal flash ,then olive crystal flash and then 8 to 9 peacock.. finish proportion with white bucktail on the bottom and red bucktail for the gills... finish with a wide cut of white saddle hackle ..cut short to craddle the eyes.... epoxy the nose...I may have missed a step, but that's about it. If you look at the picture on the archive board you can see how the material lays out much better.
