Cleaning a reel

I have an ancient Pflueger Medalist that has served me well over the years. Have to admit that I haven't given in a thorough cleaning in a "long time." It started acting up on a recent trip to Alaska so I think its about time. This is just a simple click and pawl drag. When I open it up, the grease is pretty caked up and hard. What is the best way to get this crud off? I assume that I need some type of solvent; paint thinner, gasoline, does it matter? Can I dunk the parts? There is a plastic or fiber disk for the clicker drag. Will solvent hurt that? Anyone have any cleaning tips? Other than, don't let your reel get that dirty!:tsk_tsk:
