That was it.... both days ..dead.. Great weather though. Got down to the Light about 5:30am and bumped into Big Cat who had nothing to report. Then Juro came down and headed to the right to the point. He fished with Terry and then Nick fished with me for awhile. Leon Long is yelling to me from the parking lot.. "There aint no fish over thar". Left the guys hoping they had good luck and then met them..Juro, Terry, Nick and Roop at the Chatham Squire for lunch.. After they were going to Brewster or the usual south shore stroll on the way home. But what really touched me was that Roop, on behalf of all the members of this board who know me and have either stayed or visited CAC, or not, Gave me a beautiful hand carve sign, about an inch and half thick and three feet long, carved in Old english lettering with gold leaf, the boarders were in gold leaf ,and a beautiful wood fish, I mean finish, Spelling out ..."CHATHAM ANGLER'S CLUB", and underneath in smaller lettering .."EST..2000". It is the gift of a life time. So, from the bottom of my heart I want to thank you all for this most thoughtful and meaningful gift. My local buddies ,one of whom, Leon Long does not flyfish, and John Mulhander,, who does both ,were not to be outdone. Roop gives me there contribution to CAC .. a taxidermied Sand EEL.. mounted on a 2 inch by 7 inch board and Polyuethaned all over.. A sense of humor is all you need to get though anything. Both are now on my mantel piece. Anyway.. saw Brendan O'Brien this morning at the light house and we both left to the end of a memorable season. Juro has pictures of the sign and I hope to show all of you this sign. Roop, don't forget to tell your wife a thank you from me on the great wrapping job.
John,
Sorry that I had to miss the presentation, as always Roop not only is a fishing machine but a thoughtful dude. I was thrilled when I heard of his idea. CAC is a special place and it's owner has always tried to be there for us.
Now enough sucking up.... where are you gonna hang that sand eel?
I'm sorry I missed it as well. God knows there was enough "planning" (read: scheming, conniving, emailing, telephoning with information and schedule updates, waiting, hoping, shuffling of feet waiting in front of the Squire to see who'd make it for the presentation, etc., not necessarily in that order }> - did I say WAITING??? - for you, John ;D ) to have you and as many members as possible together, whenever this came together.
I commend Roop on the thoughtful idea; I am happy to have been a willing, yet surreptitious and covert party to these proceedings.
Congratulations, My Good Friend.
Thanks to all who participated, who received our "Mole Mail" and attempted to adjust their schedules to join in the fun and festivities.
Roop - Capital Idea !
Juro, FredA - Thanks for helping keep him off guard
Bill Stanton - I'm glad he didn't make much of us talking that Saturday morning
To Anyone at the Light that weekend - congratulations and thanks for helping us keep it secret.
That was the best fishing trip without any catching that I've ever had, meant with all sincerity.
Special thanks to Roop for taking the task of getting the CAC sign made. He and I were fishing one day and it came up in conversation that I had been feeling pretty bad about not getting the sign made up for John although I thought of the idea at least a year ago and vowed to get it done. Being the kind of guy that he is, Jeff said "I'll get that done" and took action where I had nothing but a good idea and good intentions. It was his coordination and every contributors generosity that made it possible.
The sand eel plaque that Terry brought you from your local Chatham buddies was a riot! You got two conversation pieces in one day.
It was good to be out, the season was stellar. Until May, there are a thousand things to keep busy with and the goal is to get them all out of the way before it all starts over again!
Your hospitality and stewardship are greatly appreciated by all.
The sign was Juro's idea, I just ran with it as I saw his frustration grow due to his desire to do as much as possible for everyone.
Many people contributed, my list is at home, will post later. I'm sorry that we weren't able to pull off a group presentation but after our last failed attempt, when the sign was FINALLY finished - I thought it was best to just get it out.
Jeff..Yes.. please let me know on the list. Dave sent me a bunch of e-mails and the list looks large. Well, I guess I will have to put in a bath and shower down in my basement (which has a separate entrance).. bunks.. tying tables, a large screen TV... will have to meet Brendan this weekend at the Antique Fly fishing show to get more stuff for the basement...etc. Actually... that would be a great idea...Hmmmmm.
I've had the pleasure of darkening the CAC's doorstep and found both the host and the premises to be welcoming and hospitable to all comers.
There is no finer spot on the Cape to wash the skunk off with a hot cup of coffee and great conversation. On the other hand, there is also no better location to bask in the glory of a productive day with a glass of elixir, be it pogey oil or another suitable substitute.
Antique Angler's Show is in Boxborough, Mass this weekend...sadly, it's a far cry from what it was even 3-4 years ago.
Always interesting however, as is the preview of Bob Lang's auction. Gives on the opportunity to see & hold (smell too I suppose ???) some fascinating pieces.
Congrats to you John. I heard about the "sign" idea last visit and could not think of a more fitting thank you. I hope to get to see the sign, the boys and you on my next visit to the cape and "next time" I will get to do some R&R at the now official CAC, after a day on the sandy points of the Cape.
Man, is that a sharp looking sign !!! Great idea, Juro and Jeff. Now CAC will forever be memorialized by the respect it's "members" have for the Founder 8)
Juro... great picture... I had forgotten that they were shots taken at the Squire... I will keep it indoors except when you guys are down in the spring.. put two hooks in it at the top and hang it over the front door . But will not leave it out if no one is there.. It's to impotrtant to me to do that.
The sign look great!! A really high quality piece of workmanship for a very deserving recipient.
John, a sincere thank you for your hospitality at CAC and stewardship out on the Chatham beaches. It been great fishing with you and the rest of the forum this season.
John, I am sorry I missed the presentation. The sign looks great, and the efforts have been bestowed on a very deserving recipent. I have not yet been to the house of worship ,(CAC), but I will keep an eye out for items which might seem appropriate for display. Both your hospitallity and your desire to collect items that relate to our favorite pastime have made the CAC a special place, and as well, you a special person and someone I'm proud to call a friend. Thanks for your patience and guidence this past season. I already can't wait for spring. CONGRATULATIONS
Sorry I missed the presentation. My thanks to John for sharing his knowlege of the Chatham area and the incredible CAC.
As I told Dave Fix in an e'mail, we're havin a good time exploring Italy. Lots of interesting stuff. I bet that Michal Angelo guy could carve a killer striper plug.
Fred - glad you're having a good time. I hope I get your email before you return to the States, 'cuz I don't have it yet, and it's five hours since you played in the Internet.
Fred... any fly or fishing shops? I know you are on limited time but you should see if there are flies that are unique to the area.. Have a great time and great meals
JOHN - MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT FLY ORIENTED PURSUITS ARE IN THEIR INFANCY THERE, BASED ON A EMAIL I RECENTLY RECEIVED FROM A FRIEND
