Hit the bayside flats looking for some bass in my yak amidst the rain and fog. Spooked a couple in the absolutlely still conditions. Not a ripple on the water and you could hear for miles it seemed. Ended up pulling the yak as the tide slacked with a goose egg on the scoreboard. Took my new Jeep down a few side trails of the cape to get its first mud and sand in the tires. Started to head home but my steering wheel veered towards the rumors of south side blues. Made it to the shore in Cotuit and walked into the most blues I've ever seen the shallows. Hooked 10 or so and called it quits. The blues were areobatic and ravegenous. One even grabbed my waders as I tried to land it! Great day on the water
Sounds like you're going to need new waders, if not a new leg....my nurse's boyfriend has a fishing buddy that almost had a thumb taken off by one....thought it was a striper and ended up with "bluefish thumb" instead! OUCH!!!!
Had similar results on the bayside Saturday am. Looked pretty damn fishy, just like Friday. Was teased when I spooked one tight to the shore as I approached the water, then I found a herd of dinks, but that was it. I was imersed in looking for fish when I got spooked off the flat by a flash to the north. No thunder or anything so I went back. Went out to a fishy looking bar that was being flooded and cast around with no results. As soon as I vacated the bar they started breaking. More small fish though so no real loss. Two mornings in a row the conditions seemed ideal for bigger fish but it just didn't happen, though I had to throw in the towel at the beginning of the best part of the flood both days.
I had an experience like that at Cotuit three years ago, after being out most of the night elsewhere & hooking up with just one little guy. Someone told me late last year that the landing at Cotuit was restricted to permit holders now. Is that true ? Where did you park ?
Yeah, i haven't seen if my waders sustained any damage, but it was pretty high up as the blue did a nice tail walk into me. It was rather frightening!
Too be rather honest, I'm not really sure where I fished in Cotuit. I just started driving south on roads until I ended at a beach. The beach seemed to be resident parking only, but given the poor weather I figured I could risk it. Road ended and towards the West, the Beach was marked private property. Towards the E there was a small rock pile and then a half mile or so of beach. Familiar to anyone? I've got GPS coords, but that's bout it!
Didn't see you on the flat we discussed, the girls landed plenty of schoolies to 28" & we saw plenty of bigger ones cruising on the bottom, they just don't have the discipline to let the lure sink yet. We were drifting from 2' - 15' and spotting the fish cruising the sand in between the grass beds.
Roop,
I was there with two other yaks and a boat drifting around until about 10am. I couldn't see the fish from my yak with the light the way it was. I tried blind casting for a while, but just couldn't get the right feel being in the yak. Tried to hop out and wade, but it was a tade too deep for succesful sight fishing. Glad you and the family had a successful outing! There was definitely some larger fish around, as I spooked them on the surface a few times.
Nick
