I am thinking about a 4pc. I realize that there would be two more ferrules to finish, but am I right in assuming that there is very little added complexity to building a travel rod over a 2-pc?
I haven't done one yet, but plan on building a 4 piece 10 wt as well for a project this winter. The extra work versus a 2 piece that I can see is:
2 extra ferrules to wrap
2 extra sections to spline
Maybe some time spent playing with the alignment of the sections when checking the spline of the assembled rod.
Possibly having to play around with the guide placement vs ferrule location.
Finishing 2 extra sections. I only do a section at a time to prevent gluing them together
My guess is maybe an hour or two difference in the time required to build the rod.
Hi John I agree Only the extra ferrules to wrap but you refer to finishing, do you meen applying to the wraps or the complete blank. It is best to apply finish to one section at a time and the remaining portions of the blank need no further coatings. When coating the wraps I have thined the first coat of epoxy with a few drops of alcohol for better penetration then used the regular mix for the final coat.
Ron, I finish only the wraps not the blank, and do one section at a time. Finishing the wraps on a 4 section rod will not take much extra time, but I will need a few extra days to complete the task with only 1 rod turner. The tip on the thinning with alcohol for the first coat of finish is good. Which alcohol are we talking about methyl, ethyl, isopropyl?
If you can tie flies you can wrap a rod. The most difficult part of the project is the finish.
You must keep dust to a minimum. I have made 6 rods and each on gets better than the last.
In my opinion 4 pc is the way to go. I makes it much easier to travel wi th a 4 pc rod.
My favorite rod is the 9 1/2 foot 4 pc RPL+ Sage for 9wt . It really is a 10wt rod. Most modern
rods will handle one line higher and cast like a rocket. Sage makes a 10' 8wt that would really be
a 9 wt and would be great for the surf.
