About a month ago Will (my 6 year old) and I went fishing with some guys from the Outdoor Channel. Hunters Journal was the weekly series that we went with. They are having their spring promo Jan 1st (tomorrow) at 8am central (9am Eastern, 10am Pacific). It will just be a short blurb during the promos I'm sure. The full show will air 3 times during the week of Feb 3-7th.
It was about 28 degrees the day we filmed and Will caught some really good fish. I dont want to spoil it but he caught several "fish of a lifetime". Being there with my son and watching him do his very best, and losing a few, was a ton of fun for me.
I can see a long future with my boys and I fishing together and talking about lifes lessons. The day that they caught on film was truly one of those days where I saw that my boy was growing older and becoming a man. I'll have to enjoy it while I can. I'm just glad that they got it on film.
Love to hear about other parents who introduce their kids to fly fishing at young ages. There is nothing quite like the enjoyment of fly fishing with your kids. I'm also fortunate in that my wife is also a fly fisher, she caught the bug after we were married 2 months and she asked if I could teach her how to fly fish. Took her out the next day and she caught a 3 pound brown on Montana's Prickly Pear Creek. My boys have been fly fishing since age 3 (they are 11 and 15 now), and my 13 year old daughter fly fished from age 5 until age 11 when it became "uncool for a girl to fly fish", as her friends put it. I'm now looking forward to introducing my 1 and 2 year old grandchildren to fly fishing in a couple years.
I bet your daughter will come back to fly fishing latter in life. My daughter spent many a weekend between 5 and 12 with me on the Madison, and the Henery's Fork fly fishing and collecting insects for her collection. But at 12 fly fishing was no longer the in thing to do.
Ten years latter her fly rod sits by the front door always ready for a few minutes away at the creek or pond from the daily rigors of raising my grandson , paying ranch bills and keeping the vet records strait. Often I get a note about a an evening on the pond or about a special hatch that took place and most of all a thankyou for pointing her in the direction I did.
One thing I've learned over time is that if you push too hard they will resist. It took me awhile to understand our time fishing together wasn't about fishing at all to her way of thinking and then eventually mine.
Now I'm really lucky that I have a grandson. Can't wait to get the rod, worms and bobbers out when he is a little older. If he ever wants to fly fish then we will go.
My daughter taught me a long time ago that the time spent fishing or camping with her wasn't about the fishing at all. I'm very fortunate because she and her husband live only 10 miles away. Interestingly, she still asks when I'm going to do some commercial fly tying again. My son-in-law recently mentioned that Melanie would like to have a framed Atlantic Salmon Fly for the living room. Mat doesn't fly fish but if they stop by and I'm doing some tying, he moseys right in, watches intently, and asks questions about what the fly is used for.
I'm pretty sure that what you said about your daughter going back to fly fishing in the future is probable going to happen with my daughter. She also thinks that the drift boat we bought last March is the coolest thing. I suspect that she will be asking about taking her and the grandkids down the river in it in about 3 or 4 years.
You are absolutely right, time spent with your kids is priceless.
We were watching the Outdoor Channel last night and Hunter's Journal is running some of Will's footage in their opening credits. It looks like they got one of the jumps on camera of the 28" rainbow. I'll update you guys later but the address of the site that produces the show is www.hunterscatalog.com It has all the times and show dates listed.
