Sounds like droughts, and commercial fishing have stalled the steelies so far...Any recent first hand reports? I leave tomorrow AM, just curious....-Randy
if anyone can bring em up you can. good luck finding all the players in the pools. bring your cell with you so i can hassle you out there. dont forget to say hello to momma when you get in to the town of terrace. man im envious.
A friend of mine has rented a cabin on the Skeena, just upstream from the Kispiox Village. He has already hooked three fish, and he has only been there for three weeks. And that is no BS
that sounds horid. but you dont know randys fishability. he has a horshoe impaction . we fished skeena and copper last year this time. i landed four, my buddy pat two and randy 6 for the week we were there. i hope the run isnt so slow to average one a week. something more to say for the erie/ ontario tribs. but still nothing like truly wild chrome!
id give a vicarious report for flesh fly but cell range not so good out there with usa coverage, we will see when he gets back on the 17th
I didn't make it up to the Kispiox, but I managed some good fishing condintions on the Skeena. Worked hard for the fish. Managed a bunch on streamers, and got 5 on the DRY! More impressive was this was my first trip that I exclusively fished the Spey. If it weren't for Juro's instruction I would have been a mess.
bet those on dry fly came with a shiver of adrenalin, and on the bulkley, or was it the china bar on the skeena?. we're slinging on friday and ill be swinging the chinookies on sunday, great lakes slam here i come. welcome back, seems that the bears had enough berries. didnt miss much on the striper front.
Attached are some of my favorite pics, I think they should come out. This was certainly one of my more challenging fishing trips, but my persitence, with a little luck from mother nature paid off. Looking back of course all the fish were each a very special experience, but I had the opportunity to watch this brown bear accross the river for close to half an hour......
Sadly my annual trip to the Bulkley was cancelled. Anybody have any reports on the fishing up there? FleshFly, those pix are terrific and make me want to break out my two-handers and just lawn cast.
Rich- Good to know for the future, I usualy don't bring them out of the water, but I was fishing alone and wanted to get full shot of this one...I will usually when fishing alone keep the fish rested in some slow water, between myself anf the river, and just take close ups of the fish, as in the other picture.... I do realize that these fish are quite endagered to say the least, perhaps you are anyone may suggest any good steelhead tips for good recovery?

Flesh, Wasn't trying to be the heavy, just providing an awareness. Sometimes, we just have to forgo the picture, however hard it maybe. Three years ago on I was fishing alone and caught my biggest steelhead in WA. but I decided doing a pic on my own would be to dicey for the fish, so no picture. But it is burned in my memory.
Here's a tip, always, to the best of your ability, leave the fish in or over a "cushion of water, knee deep is nice. In WA, if you catch a fish where no harvest is allowed, it is unlawful to hold the fish out of the water. When legal to hold a fish out of water, you can alway tell a proper release photo by water draining off the fish and hopefully immediatly returned to the water. If you really need a pic, by yourself, keep the fish in the water and hold it by the wrist of the caudle, and gently roll it over to take the shot and roll back to proper release position, but the main concearn should be preparing for a proper release.
Last week the Kispiox was very poor due to low water. Bulkley fair. Skeena good.
guys fishing wet did well on the Skeena. My friend fished dry all week and averaged two player per day but quite a few fish that would not come back. Sounds like they need rain bad.
DAMM THAT IS A NICE FISH!!!What was the temptation that hooked that fish AHH the Players, two things come to mind the fish, and the butts:smokin: steelheading trips nicorete is left at home
Rich- No harm, at all, with your post. I did need a dictionary for Criminnininyy
Attached is a bit more friendly releasse picture. The funny thing with this fish was I had found a small hole in between some riffles and was fishing a TINY hole, within minutes some German guys came up and lined up on both sides of me. They were loaded up with some heavy tips, within seconds I hooked this beauty, the good thing is they helped with photo.. Fish released, and I left the spot ASAP

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I had that right or not. It is interesting that you travel that far and it is usually the international component that is the most aggressive and display poor etiquette. I have plenty of episodes with the Germans, but it was the Italian group that was interesting. This group had one run on the Skeena that they would monopolize for the whole day and not move from it. When one would get tired the would go lay on the bank and as soon as someone approached he would jump up and get back in line. Same run, dawn to dusk, all week and not one other person could access it. Aside from etiquette, can you imagine coming all the way from Europe and standing the same spot for a week
I have experienced that mentality very close to Terrace, on Ferry Island, or some of the other well know BARS, My most recent episode was close to 44KM up on a dirt road. fishing small water, And I was viewable from the rd, some 200 yards away. Perhpas some of you may know where I am talking about. The crazy thing that it was a small run, you wouldn't even share it with a friend at the same time, but just rotate though it. I was going to try and say something but I didn't think I could keep my cool, nor would they understand me. In my brief speaking with them they had just come up from the Kitimat, which explained a lot. I have only fished the the Kitmat once when everything else was blown, I think if I am under the same scenario in the future I'll just read a book or scope out some new water blown or not. In denfense of people of who travel far, I did meet 1 guy from Austria and another from New Zealand, both with a completley different attitude, and were a pleasure to meet and share the water with. Regardless of etiquette one thing for sure is that it seems like long extended vacation/holidays(for several months) is a bit more common in the Europe than the states.
Pretty much what I expierenced on my Travels up that way the rain and snow melt brought the Skeena up about 4 feet in front of my Camp so we moved to the south and got a fuller appreciation of the RailRoad Whistle blowing Capitol of the world for a few days before the Salmon season closed. Those darn Salmon wouldn't come to a Skater :hihi:
