I know it's just a PETA-esque joke, but wait till you see the next batch of pictures...
Striblue gets hit and the whole flyline is gone like a shot. The fish gets around a pot and keeps going... we're all 'scared' the rod is going to explode. The fish wins, but luckily it's the leader that gave way. JOhn and the rod are recovering nicely.
Nick gets a pig on and the backing is rips out so fast on a secondary run that his finger is sliced but good, then the fish cleans his clock and swims off leaving him wounded, but alive.
I land a fat legal and the line gets wound funny after the backing being exposed for an extended time. The next serious fish grabs the fly and tears off like a gunshot, the line bites into the unevenly wound running line. I try to step the the edge of the dropoff with it but it surges and explodes 20# tippet (rip tippet). Man that thing gave me the shakes. I am undergoing psychiatric observation.
Then Roop lands a fish somewhere between three feet and forty inches, shoulders like a linebacker and mean to the bone; then on the flats Nick lands one that measured at 37" that beat him up. Roop finds a 40" pig and another one takes him to the cleaners that seemed bigger. But will require hypnosis to snap them out of their gleeful trances.
Lately... the fish have been scaring me! }>
> I am seriously considering going up to an 11wt. The 9wt just doesn't cut it on these fish. I am not kidding, Lou Tabory knew what he was talking about.
Juro.. took the 10 wt.this morning.. met Roop and Pete Gray... windy but great.. same today as yesterday for fish appearance. Roop takes the cake today with a 40 1/2 incher.. We are all hitting. I land 7 good fish and a couple schoolies. Pete takes his share. What a perfect day... Mine were all between 27 and 32.. good fish.
Great experience yesterday with Nick & Juro, fishing together joking, learning & experiencing a new area and TONS of great fish.
Today with John & Pete, same area, but a totally different day. Three guys fishing by themselves, passing each other, helping each other out, casting aspersions as well as flies.
I had limited success, ran into the hybrid striped trout selectively feeding and ignoring everything I had to offer. Close to 75 fish feeding in an area very similar to a trout stream and just laughing at anything I had to offer.
My final trump card paid off with a fish taking me well over 100 yards into my backing, chasing him I lost him as he turned back into the current and charged me. After reloading my backing onto my reel my first cast paid off again. Around 10- 15 minutes later I 'm landing a nice fish. Tried to release him but when I was able to lip him after reviving him & letting him go, I knew he was headed for the grill tonight.
Juro's wise-cracking tutelage of yesterday really helped me land that fish today. Thanks man.
So...fishing with John and Roop was great...Next time I'm going to wear comfortable shoes, all that walking has my feet aching!...and we all did our share of catching (although Roop got a little carried away)...I had lent him my tape measure earlier and I found it attached to the steering wheel of my truck with a few hitches holding exactly 40.5" dangling in my envious face...NICE ONE!
LET'S GO FISHING!
Pete... That was interesting why you guys yaked... it was, in my opinion, much easier to walk.... I could still beat you there at a good clip. Yaking.. to much wind for me... the legs work better.
What a day on a Saturday! Nothing quite like hearing Roop's voice startle me out of sleep at 3:15 in the morning. I had a blast fishing with Juro, Roop, and John on Saturday. I learned more on fishing in one day than I have in the past year. Fishing the flats under Juro's tutelage was wonderful. He had me into that 37" fish after about 15 minutes from being dropped off. I finally felt like I understood the flats game and I can't wait to get back down there and try again. Nice to meet Jeff and Mike and guest (sorry forgot the name) on the flats as well as bump into John (who was done fishing after the morning!).
Juro, thanks again for the help on Saturday. It was awesome. Good restaurant pick as well, that fried fish was excellent.
You guys are frightening me. So much so, that I went out and picked up a new 10wt set up. From what I'm reading, I hope it's enough. It has to be. The gear budget is shot for this year. Sunday morning. Can't wait.
Jimmy
