This fly, similar to the Silver Rat, was invented by Charlie DeFeo of New York. DeFeo was an avid angler and invented many patterns for salmon fishing

Hook: Up eye salmon hook
Tag: Oval silver tinsel and fluorescent orange floss
Tail: Golden Pheasant crest
Butt: Peacock herl
Body: Back 2/3 silver tinsel, front 1/3 black floss
Rib: Oval silver tinsel
Wing: Golden Pheasant tippet in strands under gray squirrel tail
Collar: Grizzly hen hackle
Head: Red

Charlie.

Charlie,

I've tied and used this fly for summer runs and found that although it will catch fish when tied small, it is not as effective as a featherwing Silver Blue (which is my favorite tinsel bodied summer steelhead fly), an Ally's Shrimp in the same colors, or an Irish Shrimp styled fly made of the same colors. However, it sure is a good looking fly that has a very nice compliment of colors that clearly shows DeFeo's ideas of using sparsely tied, prismatic flies in low-water. I'd like to see others try it for summer steelhead to see if their experience with it parallels my own. I also suspect it works better in the eastern waters because of its smelt-like colors.
