Has anybody figured out how to target tautog on fly? We all catch them occasionally, but has anybody really honed down the methods? I know they're primarily taken on crab bait and wonder whether some sort of a crab fly might work wonders.
I have never caught a tautog on a fly but "American Angler" magazine ( May/June 2008 ) contains an article by Alan Caolo titled "The Tautog Flats".
In the article Alan, the author of "Sight-Fishing for Striped Bass", describes fishing in the shallows for spawning tautog. He identifies Skok's Blind Crab, the Green Diablo, the Zonker Strip Worm and the Sand Shrimp as patterns that have proved promising.
Obviously he's not talking about sandy flats such as Monomoy. He indicated that soft bottom flats with a mixture of shells rock and sand are more attractive to tautog. He also indicates that the less you move the fly the more likely you are to get the fish to take.
It sounds like a lot more effort needs to be made to find out what really works.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
Dan
