Launched my kayak in the Ipswitch/Parker Wildlife Area last night. Picked up one fish on the edge of the sandbar on the Crane's Beach side. Just a schoolie, but a nice swipe at the crease fly I was using. By then the sun was beginning to set, and I didn't have my light with me so I started to head in. Looked behind me to see where the gulls had gone too since they had left the bait in front of me. Saw them all tightly packed a little further out, so I hopped in my kayak and floated out to them. Dropped my anchor, and for the next half an hour I had fish boiling around the boat. Boated another 7 or 8 in that time, to about 22". Nothing big really, but I had a few hits and drops that definitely seemed stronger.
So nothing to report for the Turdy, but a nice night on the water anyways. Gotta take the non rainy days whenever possible it seems....
Nice report. We were up at PI and for about and hour had fish and birds working right at our feet. Thought they were on sand eels at first but apparently they were silversides. Didn't catch anything big but had a great time catching shorties.
The only drag was that on the way in I saw quite a few folks taking sub-legal fish home with them
I am going to put the EPO hotline into my cell. I've seen guys who'd double for the Gloucester fisherman icon fileting shorts as quick as they catch them on the cape at night.
They've found boats on trailers with every compartment packed with schoolies on the way home from a trip.
Nick, yes I've sight fished there from a friend's boat. It was good all the way up to the bright sand / shoals north of Pavillion in PI Sound. I've also been there with the family doing the beach thing and have seen them pass by. Beautiful water to do that but the current is extremely fast in most spots and it floods very quickly.
I have also worked the inlet of the Annisquam at Wingaersheek the same way, although the ones that passed by whizzed so fast they made Monomoy fish look like slugs. I mostly bland cast into the most likely lanes and caught some very nice fish. Yak would be better for out there because a wader can get trapped very easily.
I'll bet there are spots on the Annisquam where you could do some super sight fishing on the flood as well.
The Essex shoals up inside look great for sight fishing, I would like to try an excursion in there sometime this year.
Hey Terry, is it too late for a Winni bronzeback outing?
Ya I sight fished Sandy Pt. last year........in my boat:eyecrazy: I really drifted over it in about 6" of water. It was crawling with fish that day. The drift would only last a short minute or so with crashing surf waiting at the other end. Hairy stuff. That whole area seems to be good early and then later at the beggining of the migration. Other times it's dead. I'm going for it tommorrow if I can clean my spark plugs and test the motor tonigh.
Juro: Bronzebacks? Always interested. Did you know there are something like 357 islands inlake Winn.? I could use a weekend away in northern New England too with a fishing crew.
Not sure exactly...I think Environmental Police Organization. Or maybe Environmental Protection Organization? Anyways, pretty sure that number is only the MA one.
I'd probably make it a day trip but maybe with a night before tying party at a cheap motel to save the driving. Sooner is better I'd say, otherwise the fish are going to be in that dawn dusk only mode.
That toll-free number is the Dept. of Fisheries and Wildlife Radio Room, Comm. of MA.
EPO is Environmental Police Officer (again, MA)
