Dad, mom, and the new baby need a vacation! March / April are the magic months for a 7-10 day trip.
Dad wants fish. Mom wants beach. Both are in their 30's, and baby will be 6 months old. Nothing too touristy, preferably with a dash of ecotourism.
After eons of graduate school and good work habits, we are looking forward to a real vacation. Open to anything, have good casting chops, and looking for a memorable fishing experience within 1 long travel day of Oregon.
Where for a good fishing vacation with beach? I was originally considering Baja, but March / April seems like a slow time. Travel months are non-negotiable.
March / April is prime in the Bahamas but can be windy with the odd cold front (mind you, that seems to happen anywhere I go these days).
When you mention Eco tours I immediately think of Costa Rica - rainforest tours and awesome inshore/offshore fishing (no wading flats though). Belize might be another possibility.
I stayed at the Cuzan Guest Lodge in Punta Allen, Mexico 2 years ago. Had a great trip. It is about a 4 hour drive south of Cancuun.
Caught bonefish, snook, baracuda, snapper, jacks and hooked two tarpon (lost both of 'em). Reasonable prices, nice folks, decent guides and good food. I beleive they have a web site. If you go, get a beach cabana. It's a little rustic, I'd say it's two steps above camping. Food was good. Very laid back. Located on Ascension Bay.
Other idea would be baja, cheap from the west coast. South end of sea of cortez should be kicking in, by then. I have stayed at Rancho Leanardo.
Have fun.

I've made about 6 trips to the caribbean now and I have found that the later you go, the safer it is. Wind is a big problem early in the year, and cold fronts can push the fish out into deeper water. the farther south you go, the less of a factor this may be. I was completely blown out in the southernmost Yucatan in mid-April one year, and was only able to fish about half of the time in early May in northern Belize
Also for the type of fishing that I like to do, the best starts in June in Baja
If I had to go some place early in the year, I would consider Christmas Island. However that is about $2800 plus tips per week after you get to Hawaii
Steve,
I would agree with Rooster. I just got back from Cuzan guest house in Punta Allañ, Mexico. Together with the unbelievable fishing in Ascension bay you have the Mayan ruins of Tulum and Coba´on your way in or out of Cuzan. I would also agree with Rooster, the beach front cabanas are great for falling asleep with the caribean waves rolling on the beach infront of you. On my trip last week I hammered the bones and cudas, also had many opportunities for the permit, snook and tarpon.
Did you not say 6 month old baby? Forgive me if you folks do not agee with me, but there's no way I'd take a baby of that age out of the country. I raised three kids and have spent time abroad. That child will not have had sufficient immunization to withstand any disease that the third world might throw at it, and believe me, kids are more succeptible to catching bugs than adults. The infant mortality rate is seriously high outside the US. There's a reason fo that. The diseases we have wiped out here still are serious issues in the third world. I have been in Mexico and been ill, it could be devastating to child so young. Health care there is shakey at best, and believe me, they'd want every penny you have just to inadequately treat your child. Could be a very bad idea. I would check with your pediatrician first. What is wrong with Hawaii if tropical is what you want, or Marthas Vineyard o some other such place in the safe ol' USA?
thanks for the help and concerns ... but please notice the date of my post - last year.
So we went to the East Cape, stayed at Rancho Leonero (4 days - awesome - beach front cabana) and then Hotel Buena Vista (2 days - too American - too crowded).
3 days in a Panga. Got into Dorado, Skipjack, Bonita, Jacks, and Rooster on the fly, plus landed 3 marlin on conventional tackle (my first). Hooked 3 marlin trolling flies, but all 3 came unpinned - nor is that really "fly fishing" to me. I wish I had the means and the time to really fly fish for marlin, but for now I'm pretty happy chasing local steelhead 12 months a year.
and our 6 month old had a GREAT time. We'll be going back.
Both of our kids started travelling at 3 months. I would recommend that you stay clear of Central America and stick with moore developed areas such as the Bahamas. Mexico is okay if you stay at a nice hotel/resort as your child will probably be feeding on formula or breast milk. Belize is a little too wild and lacking in medical facilities (not to mention all the poisonous critters). I would head to Abaco if I were you.
