Hey all, I am going fly fishing for steelhead for the first time this weekend. However, the only fly rod I have is a 8'6" 7wt rod I use for smallies. Is this going to be enough rod? If so, what would be good flies to use in NW IN?
Thanks for any help, and I will be sure to take pictures for all to see if I catch my first chromer.
Your rod will work fine on steel and coho, watch out for the kings they will rip you up.
There is some marginal fly water in NW Ind. leave your tips at home and resort to a floater with some small split shot.
There is a fly shop in Chesterton that can offer advice on hot flies. Were it me I would use the standards nymphs, stones, caddis, esls (yuck) and egg flies. All of them will take fish once you find water that will allow a clean drift/swing.
Be prepared to fish log strewn and brushy streams.
PM me if you want info on the fly shop.
