Boston Harbor and South Shore—Striped Bass 5/28/02

On Monday Eric Shimpf and his Boss from Merrill Lynch, Boston had a great day of fly- fishing in Boston’s inner harbor. Right from the start, the bass were breaking off the Airport feeding on silversides and alewife. Large Chartreuse Half & Halfs in size 4/0 worked well using 400 grain DepthCharge line. The anglers were impressed with the performance of the new 9 wgt. T-3, weighing in at 4 ¾ ounces. So much so that, Eric’s Boss, never let it go the whole day. The flyfishers accounted for numerous bass in the 20 to 27 inch size class before the school went down. Moving to Quincy bay, the T-3 matched to a 9/10 Vortex anti-reverse held it own with a keeper bass between 36 and 38 inches that was dropped boat side. Three keepers were tallied up to 32 inches—all released unharmed.

Tuesday was a banner day for Bill Manzello and friend from Worcester, MA on their annual fly fishing excursion to Boston. Once again the inner-harbor was gang-busters early with the bass on the surface until about 7:30. Both Quincy Bay and the Airport were excellent even though the fish weren’t showing. Before the day was done the fly- fishers heated up the Vortex on 9 keepers between 28 and 33 inches. Both anglers, dropped bigger bass using the Chartreuse Half and halfs. In Quincy, bass were swirling on the surface. Switching to Wonderline using sliders and gurglers produced some exciting surface action strikes and follows from some bigger bass.

Reports from the outer-harbor and the South Shore are that big schools of keeper bass are feeding on the mackerel schools outside.
