Yesterday I noticed that the fish I hooked at the Bass River gave me an explosive strike & short run and then kind of gave up. Jim had the same experience.
Any ideas why?
The Chatham fish of course gave me a nice hard fight all the way to the release...
While that's a more pleasant explanation, I would appreciate some kind of spin on it like, "they were so focused on my perfect flies and presentation that once hooked (with a sharp fly) they realized it was easier to just give up."
It's a little sexier than they were fat & tired ...
Maybe they were in migration mode and had traveled several miles before stopping for a bite. This affects the way other fish fight.
There was a rock in a steelhead river I used to fish. The fish hooked in front of the rock fought far less than the fish behind it. I guessed that the one in front of the rock in the rapids was working a lot harder than the one behind.
Well given that the fly you were using at Bass River had a point as sharp as a sledgehammer the fish gave up because they had already been bludgeoned into submission ( dontcha just love that kind of talk! ).
