I guess I'm the first one home. I'll be breif as my wife has chores for me. I just wanted to start this thread & let it fly. Plenty of fish were caught & there are many stories to be told. I'll be more detailed later. Terry is the master host!!! Everyone pitched in & everything worked out smoothly. Al's sausage Lasgana rocked.

Again, Thanks Terry for a memorable May weekend that I'll never forget!!!!!

Clave Meister Terry.

I whould like to thank you for the outstanding job you have done in bringing the community toghther for this event. I know a lot of your time was put into this so others could have a fun time.

I am sorry I did not get to meet all the clavers but the ones I did were all top notch individulas and fine fishermen that I would wet a line with any time.

Once again thank you.

John

PS. Same time next year

What a GREAT start to the season. Thanks Terry for spearheading this thing and thanks to all the attendees for adding your personal bits to the experience. I was thinking the night before the clave, when I was having trouble getting to sleep, that if I were just going fishing I would not be so excited. The difference was that I was going fishing with a great bunch of guys and I was going to learn, laugh, tie wind knots, and share fish stories with them. The clave was all that and more.

My stats for the clave:

33 Saturday up to about 26"
5 Sunday up to about 22" (includes one shad)
About 15 wind knots (they were depressingly simple - I must be losing my touch.)
Lost count of the many good laughs.
One valuable fly tying lesson.
My first bass on a fly popper
My first shad on a fly
One great meal and conversation at Clancy's
One experience of kicking myself (If I had only hung on for a bit longer the weather would have changed)
and one totaly new experience - being elected clave Pope, I don't know what my duties were but I hope I fulfilled them.

Thanks again to everyone. I can't wait till the Monomoy clave.

**** first and foremost - THANKS TERRY! ****

What a great crew we had! The fishing was awesome, and the weather only gave us that reality check (rain, wind, cold) on Sunday morning.

It was great to have that sit down dinner at Clancy's. Good thing not everyone could make it - I don't think they could have seated more than one or two more than we had around that table.

Great synopsis Gregg... once again great to see you and your lucky ways on the water. Someday you're gonna have to let me borrow that rabbit's foot.

This morning Roop, John (bigcat), Ken and I ducked into the estuary to escape the wind and weather and found a fairly consistent run of fish with two I landed in the 24-26" class. Roop hooked a butt-bender (deep into the rod) but it got off, a gear guy throwing homemade poppers lost a big fish on a buoy rope. John and Ken got into the act and we all caught fish so we ended the clave with a pleasant morning with lots of fish then a breakfast at the red cottage store. The rain and clouds soon burned off and the day turned into a blast furnace by 10:30 / 11am. From hyperthermic to heat wave in an hour - that's New England!

Let's get out there again ASAP and continue what was started!

All hail the clavemiester...

Thanks agin Terry for the opportunity to share a beautiful part of the cape from your family digs. I was trying to describe how beautiful that bay is behind the house at supper tonight but I WAS TOO DAMN TIRED from Juro's snoring to think straight... Just getting on you Juro, can't give you grief about your fishing, that's for sure.
A saturday am sight to behold when we got the boat down to the mouth of the river to see what appeared to be 11 fly rods bent double with fish on...
For the record, ssully (the boat beast) was all over the fish on Saturday off of Hyannis, he spotted the birds and brought us into the biggest single school of fish I've ever seen on the south side. He was not to be denied.
A clave guest from Australia, Al_D's version of "Anchors Away" and the Hawkeye with the papal wave acknowledging his mastery of the craft.
The 'clave sprit lives on,

Thanks Terry!

Many thanks to Terry & everyone else!

What a way to spend a weekend - I figured from 4 AM until 10:30 PM Saturday bouncing around between the Bass river, Herring River & Pocasset is a good spring kickoff.

And I will use that as my excuse for smacking Sully with the clouser Sunday morning. Sorry man, I was just too tired & too cold. Were you wearing a cup?

Juro, nice job on the estuary. A memorable experience.

Sorry I missed most of you Sat. Showed up with a canoe but minus life jacket for 5 year old Luka. Left it on the dining room table

Went back by noon, stoped by a lego store to pay off the kid, and hooked up with a couple good ones in Falmouth. Looks like my two-hand casting demo 'll have to wait.

On the good side, the Joskolator's finally going in the water this week.

I am not worthy! Well maybe I am.

Winter is officialy over. YEA!

Terry,
You did a fantastic job and I am eternally greatful to you for my best season opener ever bar none. Everything was perfect soup(or lasagna) to nuts.

Bob,
A monster thank you for Saturday aboard Double Happiness. I think I know how your craft got it's name. Where do you mount that fish magnet anyway? http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">

Al"Lasagna Meister"& Greg,
Thanks for the entertainment. <img src="http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif" border="0" align="middle">And everything else.

Juro,
Thanks for putting up this board and bringing this great group together. Great call on Clancy's what a feed!

Hawkeye "Grand Wandmaster Extraordinaire",
If I could cast half as well as you I'd be a happy man for life.

Roop,
Thanks for the body piercing. Now I can fit in with a whole new crowd. Just kidding. <img src="http://216.71.206.188/images/flytalk/Wilk.gif

TomD, JimW, Ken, and everyone (sorry if I left out any names)thanks for the comradiere. It was great to meet you all.

Details...

Friday - 8-10 schoolies micro to 16" at the "Anchor Hole" formally known as "Across the river by the golf course hole".

Saturday - Down river aboard DH with Captain Bob. Enter the channel to a picket fence of clavers with doubled over rods.
First cast bump & miss, keep that retrieve coming and BOOM! Screeching drag and about five minutes later a solid 28" linebacker is boatside. Next drift and the Captain displays how it's done with the long wand. Several more drifts and several more fish we slide down to the mouth and the action continues out in the sea grass.

We moved down the coast to check out a possible lead without much success. Picked up one fish at Cotuit (beatiful spot) and headed back. On the way back a few birds were working the surface which turned out to be a large school of bass filling the water column top to bottom. Not stop action for better than an hour my guesstimate.

Sunday - Nasty east wind! After conseeding a possible skunk for the day I picked up two schoolies on a troll back to the camp with the Honorable Clavemeister.

Thanks again Terry and All!

Now that I've finished helping my wife move the perennial (sp?) garden in 90 degree heat, D'OH, I'm back. Got to meet & fish with a few more Clavers: Bob P, Tom D, & I nice guy from down-under. Met Sully before (at the Malborough Show), but had never fished with him. Al & I did fairly well with fish ranging from micros in the river, to mid-sized fish off the mouth, to one good sized fish off Hiannis Port. Also, a good mix of Fly & spin caught fish. And we both caught on some flies that Al had tied.

Lessons learned:

(1) Bass River is a beautiful place.
(2) Anchors work better when attached to a rope.
(3) Running line shoots better when your not standing on it.
(4) In May, mid sized stripers like to hang in eel grass covered sand bars at river mouths.
(5) Bigger stripers (28") like to run deep near the red bell off Hiannis Port.
(6) When retieving your boat at a ramp in a swift current, come up-current.
(7) Clancey's Fried Oysters are very good.

Good show Terry!

Can't wait for June 10th!

A much needed excursion. Terry, my eternal thanks!

My only regret is I did not get to meet and fish with more of you, especially those of you with boats so I could test the laws of gravity and inertia with your anchors..... We all have demons. I just happen to have clumsy ones. What I can't believe is that this singular act of idiocy won me a collection of some of the finest flies I've ever seen. I've already caught on one of them (Hawkeye's, of course). BTW, the term 'conclave' described the meeting of the Church bishops to elect a Pope. Gregg, I guess that explains your new title

Hope to see some of you on the Cape and at the Coles River in the weeks ahead.

Clave on!!

Well, I've just arrived home after 30 hrs travel. Glad to be back home but sad that my time on the Cape with such a great bunch of guys was so short.

Thanks Terry for organising one of the best trips I've been on. Thanks to all the Spring Clavers for making me feel so welcome.

I'm kinda sorry I left on Sunday - I got spooked by the weather. By the time I had decided to leave and had gone back to the motel to pack and change my flights, the fog was starting to burn-off and the day was beginning to look half reasonable. Lesson learned - if you don't like the Cape weather, just wait a minute!

The Saturday King River ebbw session was magic! After landing my first fish (450mm or 20") on my third cast, I had a feeling the long journey was going to be worth it. Twenty fish later and my intro to the "south side" and claving was complete. Witnessing "the Pope" in full-cry, wielding a popper, was an individual highlight.

In summary, great location, great comraderie (sp?) and some fishing tales that the guys back here won't believe.

Thanks again Terry and everyone. Anyone for a Great Barrier Reef Clave?

Regards,
Ken.

PS Its amazing the number of people who come up to you and start a conversation when you carry a rod tube through an airport!

Ken -

I like the sound of the Great Barrier Reef clave! No problem getting my wife to go to Australia for that one I'm sure. Really glad you could join us, it was extraordinary to have an Aussie in our midst for the season's opener.

As far as airport conversations, I think the rod tube is like a signal saying "talk to me I appreciate good clean fun and the outdoors". I've had everyone from retired admirals to grandmothers stop to talk about it. For even more chat, set up the vise on the foldout table and twist up a few on the flight!

Hope you can join us again soon, and let me know when those Seattle trips you were talking about begin. We have a great contingent in the pacific northwest too!
