This fly is probably the second most popular of the rat series next to the rusty rat. When using gray fox guard hair it is often a good idea to leave a small amount of the under fur in with the guard hairs. This will make the wing look fuller.

This is another one of those Atlantic Salmon flies that works for PNW steelhead when fished in bright sun during the day in small sizes during summer/fall. By small sizes I mean #8's-#12's. I've been surprised at how few folks here in the PNW use flies smaller than #6's even though the smaller #8's-#12's work, especially in low-water and bright mid-day sun.
It is so good that Gary Anderson renamed it the Blue Fox and had the gaul to enter it as his own pattern
Seriously,, this pattern is a fine taker of salmon that i even tie as a streamer. As russ said,, small fly/bright day fly.

Evenings ,late Aug., and earlySept. in size 12 is a GREAT fly . Nailed my biggest Salmon on Adams with this fly ! I used hair from a Silver Fox mask and IMHO JC really helps when added to this pattern.
BTW : Charlie you have an email ref. fly tying. <<<<<<<<<<<< !!!!!
