Fished Weekapaug along with Sean Sat. and fished the West Wall from the boat today. Same story both places, no bait , none. Stopped by Quonny on the way back Sat., again no bait! The breachways should be overflowing right now and the Wall should have massive schools around.
I got one FA today and saw 6 or 7 more caught, the guys fishing the wall did pretty good. NEAC snapped a brand new Allbright rod that he won over the winter. What a great day to be on the water, I could have taken my little boat all the way to Block today!
God, these albies are incredible, 250 yds. of backing and 35 more of flyline and I thought I was gonna have to chase it with the boat, it almost spooled me.

The south county is devoid but the bay is jam packed. As Jim White of White Ghost charters says " Somthing has got to give. You can`t have that many blues gorging on bait for so long without it affecting the bait population sooner or later".

Since they have still been on the move to the north, IMHO the bulk of the coastal bunker population might've passed by, with more shoals to come before they reverse and head back down there through October and early November.
I have still not seen any consistency in the massive bunker on the Chatham to Ptown stretch we do every year at this time, although one day 300 yards of beach was black with bait and fish. The general theory that things are a little late seems correct 10-15 days sounds about right.
I would guess that the cape is about to peak with bunker activity and the turn-around will probably be pretty quick due to the lateness of the season. Plymouth has yet to get their bunker invasion last I heard.
Hopefully the north shore will not get short-changed by the offset season causing signals for the bait (and thus stripers) to start heading south again. With things being so late... oh I can hear the moaning now :lildevl:
However the rare adult bunker show up the latest around the south side of the cape, and there is a corner blitz of giants on the Hardings / Stage corner every fall. It's the lottery of the year, last year it was mid-October and literally dozens of 40+ bass were landed by just a few anglers in a single night. The next morning at dawn they had moved on, it was epic.
I fished at Quonny yesterday afternoon. I saw a couple of big schools of peanut bunker on the inside, but nothing like the thick "carpets" we usually expect around this time of the season.
My original plan was to get up there for an early dawn shot at Tunoids but a cocktail party Saturday night kept me off the road until the p.m.
I spotted a couple of large stripers patroling the edge of the flats and a small pods of blues pushed the bait up into the shallows about half a mile away - all-in-all it was pretty sporadic. One solid hook-up with an LDR was all I had to show for it.
I can't believe I let the entire month of August go by without fishing the salt :Eyecrazy:
Almost forgot... there was also a small bunch of needlefish on the inside about 10 -12 inches long. Probably no big deal - I heard they get up this way,. Just never seen them this for North before.
I'd say a bit late but I've not been out much in the last couple weeks. First I've seen of them was yesterday but they may have been around prior to that.

I'm starting to have my doubts. It's Sep 14 and there is zero activity up here. There should, at the least, be more bait sighted and a few mini blitzes starting. Wah wah waaaa.....
