How snug should the winding check be on the blank? I'm using a rubber one and it's slightly loose (until I wind thread on the blank to tighten it against the grip).
The Winding Check is more of a back stop to finish off the windings being used for adornment against the cork. It also covers up any imperfection in the entry hole in the cork. You can just tie it in place provided it dose not appear out of round with the cork or place a short section of windings on the blank to the point that they emerge 1 or 2 thread wraps beyond the seating area of the check on the blank. I normally advance a few wraps up the face of the check dependent on its profile when finishing of the wrapping in of the check.
I wound a bit of thread up under the check so it now sits fairly snugly against the cork.
