How much of our fishing related time do we put aside for conservation efforts?
Consider time on the water, travel, equipment, boat maintenance, fly tying and whatever else. What percentage of that total fishing related time should be put aside for restoration, conservation and other environmental efforts?
Personally I always pick up trash as I'm out on the water. Sometimes I even bring a bag with me if I know the area has a lot of litter. It's not much but I think it helps.
Just trying to get a feel for how folks view their own participation in environmental issues, whether it's a passive interest, active engagement or none at all.
For those of you who are actively engaged tell us how and why.
It is my hope that through this forum we will not only talk about our environment but actively participate in informing and educating folks about issues. And in the end change it for the better. There is much work to be done.
Tim,
I am trying to hold a 12 times a year regimine, or once a month as a site specific task, that usualy consists of trash detail somewhere. Reality is I might get to do 6 out of 12. I carry the trash bags as a regular part of my stuff in the truck year round and use them. Long ago I realized that I was saying "I wish I had a trash bag" far to often. I do report for stream restoration a couple times a year where needed, and talk to people about enviromental issues when I get the chance. Eduation is key. As far as taking care of the planets water, in 03, there is really no excuse for trashing it.

I always try to carry out more than I what I'd be bringing out with me at the end of the day. And at boat ramps, there's usually trash cans that can be used. There's always some people who can't quite seem to make the few steps to put their waste in the proper receptacle, resulting in messy ramp areas.
And I'm not shy about talking to people who I see littering (non-confrontational). In my opinion, there's no good excuse for it.
