I have decided to go with Danielsson for my 12wt. Tarpon/Dorado rod. I want room for 300+yds of gel spun and a wf floater. Will the 9thirteen be big enough?

go to the flowing link and open pdf file with all Danielsson reel spec.

The HD 9-13 takes wt.11 and 429m of #30 GSP. For wt.12 it it will be about 390m
( 430 yards).

If you decide to go with #50 GSP, the capacity is about 300 yards.

If more backing is needed go with HD 11-14 unless you want pay $800-900 :Eyecrazy: new Control 8-13 with self adjusted drag

I think I would go for the 9thirteen myself. 430 yards of 30# gelspun / 300 yd of 50# is more than enough IMHO.

Either you are fishing giant tarpon from a boat or smaller tarpon from shore both cases 300 yards is plenty and I suspect it would balance better on a single-hand rod.

I've always believed that with a large arbor you don't need as much backing as the standard arbor reel which uses a lot of that just to get the line to the perimeter.

Anyone ever been spooled with 300 yards of backing? If so I want to hear about that fish!

Thanks Juro. I was unsure because I purchased an LW 6nine and it did not hold as much as I thought. I will reconsider the 9thirteen as I would like to have the smallest reel that meets my backing needs.
