hi, ive been doing some waterfowling as of late and have been saving feathers from birds for tying. ive been saving goose flank feathers and some quill feathers for biots and quills. im wondering what other feathers i can use and should save. does it make sense to save matching quills from left and right sides for tying dees and speys? thanks, mark

MarkNY,

No, because they are not the feathers that are used for married wings or dee/spey wings. The feathers that are used for married or dee/spey wings are the goose shoulder feathers (found in the same place that bronze mallard feathers are found, right next to where the wing attatches to the bird). The are both left and right, depending on the side of the bird they came from.

Never, never use the goose wing feathers for married or spey/dee wings. they are too coarse and the individual feather bargules are too think in diameter fro good tying.
