I own the Traveler vise in the standard cam pedastal series. Great vise. But I wouldn't say it has the best hook holding capabilities and I have busted more than my fair share of the adjusting screws. I think if I was starting new now I would go with the Dyna-King Barracuda Junior. A little over the $200 limit but not by much. Holds hooks from 22 to 8/0.
Not according to their website. Even the top of the line Barracuda only goes down to 24. I am a saltwater guy so I can't even picture what a hook that small must look like. Couple turns of thread and your done right! I would check them out at a local shop. My Renzetti is only spec'd to hold up to 3/0 I think but I have done up to 8/0.
it would be tough to think of a vice that would be good for flies down to 28 and back up to 4/0. I bet that in that price range, the Baracuda jr might be the best bet.
I would consider a Regal vice and get the midge accsesory head.
Well, it's becoming evident that I won't find a vise to do the entire range of flies I want to tie. I was just wondering whose had goodluck with what. I had a renzetti and didn't think it was that amazing but the rotary function for the price was really good and the pedestal was really steady.
its sightly smaller yes
every bit as functional though
i own a baracuda jr and it is a terrific vise i tie anywhere from 6/0 down to 24 and it does just fine
ive never used a baracuda but ive seen one in action it (in my opinion) is just a really bulky and over the top heavy version of the jr
